He could have used that money to build a tremendous K-12 online school, instead.
You can belittle me all you will, but I am one who actually embraces new technologies most of the time, as I really am a technphile and always have been.
In facebook, if you don’t want to hear from someone, you don’t accept them as a ‘friend’ in the system. If you want them as an acquaintance, you can limit what they see of your posts and what you see of theirs. It’s customizable that way.
FB is literally different for everyone, as a person’s news feed consists only of people they want to hear from.
When you stop to think that the person sending the photos or the videos has a “ping” list and can satisfy all the grandmas and aunts at one time with a few keystrokes, it’s a little less dear:)
Once you’re accepted as a ‘friend’ you see whatever they post: baby pics, dumb video, depressing rants and all. The whole thing is a ping list, only it goes to people that you mutually accept as friends.
Anyways, I think it’s innovative. I understand the trepidation however.
Accept their request but limit access to your Wall and limit what you see of their posts. If you see them in person, explain your privacy concerns in general terms. There’s a weird politics involved with the system, but it’s doable and kind of fun.
Another annoyance of FB.
I recently started getting URL’s in Spam emails for drugs.....the commonality among all was that they were all FB friends.
Got a couple of emails over the past few years from FB friends that only had links in them. Navigating the internet since 1997 has taught me not to open them. Invariably, those same friends will later issue a post not to open it. The same thing has happened with friends’ email accounts.
I have never used this Facebook but I hear it is the greatest invention since the wheel. One of these days, I'm going to logon to it and see what it's all about. Maybe I'll post a picture of my dog and talk about that great steak I had at that restaurant the other night. I'd also like to make a bunch of friends to discuss music with. I think "Buddy Holly" by Weezer is the greatest pop song of all time. Maybe that opinion will earn me a Facebook friend or two.
I worked at a major university while this process was going on (globalization of instant communication) and I would say that the problems are the ease and immediacy of the communication, along with the distancing of humanity. When someone is angry, they don’t take the time to cool off before going electronic. Kids are getting involved in sex way too early and too casually because of the ability to “ask” for it via text.
It’s astonishing to be in the halls after a class at the U and see hundreds of young people pouring out of the rooms, all grabbing for their phones. What on earth could possibly be so important?
OK...and this means anything because?????
I served 20+ years in the U.S. Army and both make much more money than I do....why should that matter to me?
“The genius lies in its simple interface and ease of use”
The real genius lied in stealing the idea from the people that paid him to program this for them.
The only wall I’ve met with it so far was when a student started to answer a text message while we were on final approach for the runway. Since then, cell phones stay in the flight bag.
We’re certainly headed for an interesting future with all of this. Check out “The Dumbest Generation” if you haven’t already.

You are kidding me, right?
A chat board is worth $billions , p u l e e z e pull my finger! LOL!
I’ve never used FB but it’s nothing new that wasn’t being used 20 years ago starting with BBS.
Who ever is valuing it at that level must really be a great fan and a genius at marketing the fleeting electrons of chat boards.
Someone said it’s a Face Book Bubble, we’ve seen this before, eh?
Just trashed a half-dozen viruses with FaceBook in the subject line.
It has arrived.
But if the 26 year old has good sense, he’ll monetize whatever he can now and go on to the next big thing.
What a waste of his money. You can’t fix Newark schools with money. There is never enough money. One news program today said Newark students cost the taxpayers $22,000 a year EACH. And by the way, his money will either be stolen by crooked politicians or pissed away by the teachers unions and school administrators. This is NJ afterall.
He would do better to set up a scholarship fund so serious parents who have serious students in that crummy school environment can send their kids to private schools.
This country is so screwed on so many levels.
