The Obama administration is drawing up legislation to make it easier for US intelligence services to eavesdrop on the Internet, including email exchanges and social networks, The New York Times said Monday. The White House intends to submit a bill before Congress next year that would require all online services that enable communications to be technically capable of complying with a wiretap order, including being able to intercept and unscramble encrypted messages, the Times reported.

Same thing got started in the administration of Bush I, and resulted in 1991 with Phil Zimmerman publishing his famous PGP algorithm for personal encryption -- and then getting persecuted by the Clinton administration for four years or more.

Ironic, that on the 20th anniversary of PGP, we should see the US government again moving to take away citizens' privacy.

Ironic... but not surprising.

The technology has improved over the years.

If the government forces internet service providers and services like Skype to have worthless encryption, then people will develop encryption that can be run from the laptop or home computer without the approval of the ISP.

It's cat and mouse, and it will be up to the individual to stay one step ahead of the government's nosy cretins.

The Patriot Act already allows wiretapping for suspected terrorists, does it not?
