I wish her well, but she’s walking a tough road - there are probably something like 200,000 households in her district.

so few are active, that when a small team does get moving, results happen. Scott Brown had thousands active in each congressional district. All the wannabees think it just happened on it's own in Massachusetts and that grassroots isn't a necessity. Why do people think that this type of activity isn't crucial? Too trivial?

"How many people can you possibly reach that way?", is a typical reaction I get from GOP folks. (I recall doing 800 houses as part of a 2-man team in a 10-hour day ... and another day when we did 1900 flyers without ringing doorbells. And we did 1000 windshield flyers one evening at WalMart, Lowe's, etc.) I have stopped until I again find a campaign that values People Power.

Your points are well taken.

I have always been one of those people who believes that many races (including Governor and US Senate) can be won on the ground.

Literature drops are sometimes hard to organize - but they definitely work. Even if the people at the doors don’t entirely read the literature, in most cases they’ll glance it over and at least will become familiar with the candidates name.

There seems to be the assumption that doing primarily phone calls and direct mail will win you the election. Sometimes it does, most of the time it doesn’t. You need a ground effort.

I’ve also been one of those activists who’d rather be out dropping campaign literature than sitting around a table discussing strategy.
