Story is that two teachers (husband and wife, teachers at a Farmington high school) gave a birthday party September 11 for their 17-year old daughter that had up to 50-underage friends attend. They had a keg of beer, Jungle Juice, Caribou Lou and Jello Shots that some kids may have gotten drunk on. They collected car keys from everyone to prevent them from leaving the party if they had been drinking. One of the girls complained to the police that she had been illegally detained and that was when the police began the investigation. The two have been suspended from teaching but on full paid administrative leave while the district is conducting its own investigation.

Why aren’t alcohol and tobacco laws treated like age of consent laws?
If you are “near” the age, you can get away with violating it?

This story sounds very familiar to me.
Lousy judgement - from teachers. Just great. Just great.

Any parent, teacher or not, who serves alcohol to any child not their own is an idiot. I’m sure these two think they are their daughter’s friends. In all likelihood, if they could hear their daughter talk about them when they were not around they would be horrified to find out that she thinks they are chumps.

Lets do the math here...
Providing alcohol to minors is illegal
Every kid at that party had a cell phone
Every kid will twitter 15 friends they are partying at a teachers house (with video)
They are going to jail.

As an 18 year old high school senior, I could drink legally. If you’re old enough to be drafted, sign a contract, vote, go to jail as an adult and so on, you’re old enough for alcohol. You can’t be half an adult.

This is one of the dumbest things I ever heard of someone doing. Not only is it illegal, they have no concept of the liability they face if one of those “kids” got into a vehicle accident. Dumb to the nth degree.

All good Dem educrat pedarests know it’s best to get the kids liquored up before attempting ‘consensual’ sex.

Wonder if the teen knows when it was legal for 18 year olds to drink the death toll went sky high before it was reversed?.

Dumb to the nth degree.I see nothing wrong with parents providing a sip of wine with a meal for an 18-year old young adult. But hosting a party with alcohol for her friends is just plain crazy. I hope that is not the mindset of teachers these days (they both are in their mid-forties), but I'm afraid good judgment and values is not required of those teaching in our classrooms these days.

I agree 100%. Let me share a story. Michigan 1971, drinking age is 18. 30 kids plus counselors on a church ski trip. The bus gets snowed-in in some little town; nothing to do but stay on the bus or go sit at the community center. A few guys persuade the two church counselors (who also happen to be teachers at a local high school) to buy us all a few cases of beer.
After some hand wringing on their part, they agreed, bought the beer, and just told us to never tell anyone what had happened.

Should have articulated the liability portion. Yes amazingly stupid.

ANOTHER REASON TO HOMESCHOOL
This ping list is for the other articles of interest to homeschoolers about education and public school. This can occasionally be a fairly high volume list. Articles pinged to the Another Reason to Homeschool List will be given the keyword of ARTH. (If I remember. If I forget, please feel free to add it yourself) The main Homeschool Ping List handles the homeschool-specific articles. I hold both the Homeschool Ping List and the Another Reason to Homeschool Ping list. Please freepmail me to let me know if you would like to be added to or removed from either list, or both.
