Biden: Agenda would come to 'screeching halt' under GOP By Michael O'Brien - 09/28/10 03:17 PM ET

Vice President Biden renewed his warning on Tuesday that the administration's agenda would come to a "screeching halt" if Republicans win control of Congress.

Biden said he was right to warn that the administration's work would be scuttled if the GOP manages to pick up enough seats in this fall's elections to win back the House, or possibly, the Senate.

"If these guys win, and I got in trouble for saying this early in the campaign," Biden explained at a rally at Penn State University, "if the Republicans take back the House and Senate, our entire agenda will come to a screeching halt."

"I was right then and I'm right now," the vice president added. "They're being straightforward about it; they're not hiding the ball."

The warning by Biden is meant to underscore the administration's efforts to turn out voters to protect the Democratic majorities in the House and Senate in November. He was in Happy Valley to urge the first-time and young voters who propelled President Obama into office in 2008 to turn out again for this fall's elections. Obama will make a similar argument later today at the University of Wisconsin at Madison.

Former President Bill Clinton made a similar warning to Democrats on Tuesday in a fundraising request for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC), House Democrats' campaign arm.

"There's a simple reason why I am planning to spend the next five weeks crisscrossing the country, campaigning as hard as I can for House Democrats," wrote the former Democratic president. "Everything that you and I have fought for since 2006 is on the line."

“If, for some reason, there are only 40 Republican Senators during the Lame Duck Session, can they still stop cloture?”

Since there are already 41 Republican senators, the only way there could be only 40 would be for one of the sitting Republican senators to switch parties or die. And I don’t think if there is a large Republican wave this November (let’s say the Senate flips — RCP predicts 49 in the next Congress, and I think they are conservative) that even the Maine twins would be that obtuse.

Additionally, there are four Senate special elections — Delaware, Illinois, New York and West Virginia — this November and Republicans are expected to take two of those. Special election winners are seated immediately after their elections are certified, so they would be in the lame duck session. That would give the Republicans 43 seats immediately — enough to filibuster even if the Maine twins flip.

So about the only way for the Democrats to stop a filibuster in the lame duck is to — literally — take out a minimum of two Republican senators. Don’t think that is possible even in an Obama-nation.

Yes, Joe, the far-left agenda will come to a screeching halt when an avalanche of strong and committed conservative candidates wrest control of both houses of congress from the Democratic Party.

That's the idea.

If the bloodbath in November is anywhere near where some are predicting it will be I don’t think holding out 40 votes for cloture is going to be a problem. if someone like Russ Feingold loses then none of the rats running in 2012 will dare try to push anything through that the people are opposed to. The obama agenda will be dead. Don’t forget the Congress controls the purse strings...

Finally. Some hope and change from this administration.

Vice President Biden renewed his warning on Tuesday that the administration's agenda would come to a "screeching halt" if Republicans win control of Congress.

Our country is hurtling at warp speed toward economic collapse and oblivion with the Democrats irresponsible taxing and spending, implementation of the culture of Death, and disregard for the will of the people. Bringing this ruination to a "screeching halt" would be a GOOD thing IMO. I do not think that this train can be easily stopped, though, even if the Republicans take over.

We have 20 million people who are unemployed, or underemployed, and they want jobs. Since the Obamista agenda stands between them and work, I'd suppose the agenda will have to go.

If Joe stands in the way, he'll have to go as well, as will his boss and the Giant Wookie.

This is the “Hope” part. We “Hope” it’ll come to a halt. GOP hasn’t exactly been agents of inspiration.

Now we need the GOP to step up, act responsibly for once in decades and deliver the “Change” we’ve been waiting for. ;-)
