I imagine these are dark days in the tastefully decorated offices of our congressional representative and speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi. Republicans only need to pick up 39 seats in the House of Representatives in order to be back in the majority, and pundits estimate that the Grand Old Party is poised to win 45 to 50 seats.
A landslide for the Republicans would be a serious humiliation since a large but unofficial part of the speaker’s job is to keep the party in power. What will Pelosi do if Dems lose the majority and she loses her position as speaker? Will she still be able to sit with the cheerleaders in the lunchroom?
Let us consider some recent history. The past two speakers who have allowed defeats in the House have each left office rather than go back to Friday nights playing Dungeons and Dragons with the Audio Visual Club. Republican Newton Leroy Gingrich (I just thought you should know that) resigned his seat in the House a few months after his party lost five seats in the 1998 mid-term elections. His successor as speaker, Republican Dennis Hastert, saw his party lose power completely in the November 2006 election. He didn’t resign immediately, but after 20 years in the House of Representatives, he declined to run for another term.
Which brings us back to Madame Speaker. Let’s assume the Democrats lose the House. Would she also step down?......

Frankly, I don’t care what Pelosi’s next career step may be, but oh what resounding joy I will have watching Pelosi being compelled to hand the Speaker’s gavel back to a Republican.
Would she also step down?......

I heard this morning on the radio that there are rumors around SF that if she loses the speaker ship she will run for mayor. They would deserve each other.
What would be Pelosi’s next step?
Is a step off the Golden Gate Bridge too much to hope for?

I don’t think she’ll run for mayor. #1, she would have some real responsibilities; #2, you can’t keep all the freaks in S.F. happy.
She’ll be at the door, turn, break it and then throw it at the Republican.
Later she will be on camera mumbling something about how the CIA lied to her.
