Gov. Christie calls Tyler Clementi's Suicide an 'Unspeakable Tragedy'

Gov. Chris Christie today called the suicide of Rutgers freshman Tyler Clementi an “unspeakable tragedy,” but said he would let Attorney General Paula Dow figure out how to prosecute the case against two fellow students accused of recording him in a sexual encounter.

“Well, first of all, as the father of a 17-year-old, I can’t imagine what those parents are feeling today – I can’t,” said Christie.

“You send your son to school to get an education with great hopes and aspirations.

Christie said his feeling on the case as a father “overwhelms whatever feelings I have as governor” and that he didn’t know how Ravi and Wei could sleep at night “knowing that they contributed to driving that young man to that alternative.”

The two have been charged with multiple counts of invasion of privacy.

Makes you wonder if the suicide was due to something else.

I'll go so far as to back away from this being a definite suicide.

Yes, with all actions come consequences. Some are deadly.

This kid had serious mental problems before he met the insensitive co-eds. I read on another thread he was involved with older men and I suspect he was probably a victim of child sex abuse.

If what they did was illegal, they should be punished. However, they should not be blamed for this kid’s mental illness and it’s result. This kid had mental problems long before he met his insensitive roommate.

Soon gay activists will be blaming anyone who does not celebrate their sex as responsible for the self destructive behaviors and mental illness of gay people. It is overkill to blame the co-eds for his mental illness. Political correctness gone wild.

There is something missing in our kids today that they would even think of doing what they did. How on earth did they think that would be acceptable? The total lack of compassion is stunning. These kids are souless.

I totally agree. What goes on in some R-rated movies is despicable, and some kids have grown up on them.

We have a freshman at our local university, Western Washington, that disappeared Friday night, after a party. It was his first week of school. I’m thinking that it might have been a suicide, as well.

That’s frightening.

College life changed since my youth. We did not have coed dorms, and you could not have someone of the opposite sex in your dorm.

He was supposedly filmed the first time kissing another male student, no sex involved.

The 2nd webcam broadcast failed.

I have two sons in college, and I can only imagine what it must have been like for his family to get the phone call from the police or the college, telling them that their son was dead. May God help them.

The parents must be in shock....living out a nightmare.

I personally believe that sending teens off to college can be hazardous to their health and emotional development. Many of them are just not ready for the environmental swamp found on most campuses today.

I agree with that. No one is looking out for these kids when they go away to college.

I think their parents are busy making money and have allowed them to be raised by wolves. The bullying is out of control. If I had ever participated in vicious razzing of someone I can tell you I wouldn’t have been able to sit down for a week. If society is becoming uncivil it’s because nobody is teaching manners, morals, and acceptable behavior.

What is wrong with these two people. SOMETHING is wrong with them. This is not normal behavior. It is perverted. They were the cause of this bright young man leaving our world when he should have just been beginning his bright future. I will pray for his family and may this young fella be at peace in the arms of the Lord.

Amen

We live with gotcha journalism and voyeuristic media shows so prevalent that young people think nothing of imitating same.

...and video games.

IMO parents should be held civilly accountable. If more parents had to pay out of their pockets for their children’s behavior they would be more involved. And if they don’t have the money throw them in the slammer too. Their failure as parents now becomes society’s problem.
