The problem has not been the terms of trade. It has been and is American high taxation of business and arbitrary and over-regulation. Clamping down on trade, initiating a trade war is merely a way to cement the Depression on us for real. That will bring us Obamunism big big time and irreversibly.

What we see here is a “shot across the bow,” we are in a Cold War now with China.

America has been rotting, and being disassembled, at a steadily increasing rate. I never believed that shipping jobs/manufacturing overseas wouldn’t kill us in the long run. Same thing for closing mines and restricting energy search/production. There are many other sectors where we have set ourselves up for failure.

All together, it’ll be a miracle if we survive as a single nation.

Free Trade is our Friend

It is.

There should be trade retribution for this, and the US should have easier access to developing our own resources.

We may have these same materials ourselves, but can't get past the EPA to mine them.

Its a combination of both. If China didn't exist the minerals would be mined here still - just at a high cost.

...what is rare earth?

Neither rare, nor earth. The term refers to minerals that can be magnetized to a high degree for use in permanent magnets. These magnets can be 10 or 1000 times more powerful than the iron magnets you may have played with as a child and have a host of commercial and military applications.
