You can hear them sharpening the long knives to go after Joe, even though he just got done dying! He may have been wrong on some Israel-related issues, but he was no anti-Semite and no racist.
I remember a great Sobran column from c. 1986 (plus or minus a couple of years.) I don’t have it with me, but I remember it so well that I can almost quote it. So here is the paraphrase:
***A funny thing happened to the World Council of Churches delegation to the Soviet Union. They ran into some Christians. You can’t blame them. [They stuck to the official Soviet religious agents’ plans.] At one church they unfurled a banner, “We are a persecuted Church,” and were whisked away...***

RIP to a brilliant, if controversial mind.

I first learned of Joseph Sobran by reading his columns in The Conservative Chronicle. That publication, along with National Review and the American Spectator which Rush Limbaugh promoted, was instrumental in my growth as a conservative.

He was an expert on, among other things, the Shakespeare authorship question Let the Oxfordian rot! I think we should now begin an examination into the question of the authorship of the "Sobran" articles. In fact, I very much doubt there ever was a "Sobran". I detect conspiracy!

Abraham Lincoln's anti-constitutionalism Where few dare to tread. "Honest Abe" was the original corporate RINO, the archetypal Republican, who made his name doing eminent domain deals for barge companies and railroads at the expense of small landowners. I can only imagine what "just compensation" constituted back then.

I was aware that he had been ill for a few years now. What a shame.
RIP, Mr. Sobran.

I debated him for the Catholic Forum in DC some 25 years ago. Topic: Prolife Seamless Garment. It turns out we were more in agreement than we had thought, he was a fair and even generous opponent, and in general it's one of the most pleasant and rewarding debates I've ever been in.
I hadn't kept up to see how he was doing. My impression was that he was very bright but sometimes went sproing-ing off on odd tangents, somewhat like E. Michael Jones.
So I have a fond place for in in my heart, and hope he may find a merciful judgment and a rescuing hand: which is what, I think, he would want for his opponents, and what One wants for all.

Please be compassionate. Often, one of the first signs of serious illness is a person’s change in thinking and personality. I was not aware of what was making Joe sick, but many cancers may begin with deep depression and such changes, if you review medical literature. May God rest his soul.

Reading Sobran in Chronicles made up for losing Sam Francis. Both gone now, the neocons must be right!
