The great graphic novel "Watchmen" featured a fake extraterrestrial attack as a ploy to bring everyone on earth together as a united front. It was an effort to end struggles between people, because we all had a common enemy. And you don't ping *me*?

Seriously though, this is a brilliant and recurring theme.
Outer Limits had an episode involving a fake alien invasion.
"The Architects of Fear".
Another foreshadowing of a likely (near) future.
Frowning takes 68 muscles.
Smiling takes 6.

I was 5 when the Architects of Fear first aired in ‘63. Scared the bejesus out of me. Couldn’t sleep for days. To this day the “alien” they created out of one of their own is one of the scariest ideas I have ever heard of and one of the scariest things I have ever seen. That episode is a classic.
