Bakery displays morals, now faces eviction

An Indianapolis cookie shop could be evicted from its longtime location for refusing a special order from a college homosexual group.

The bakery "Just Cookies" has operated in a city-owned market for over 20 years. The president of the board that oversees the market told the Indianapolis Star that he would "hate to lose them" as a tenant -- but that could very well happen because owner David Stockton took a moral stand and did not want to endorse homosexual activity.

Controversy arose this week after the owners of the bakery cited moral objections to a special-order request for rainbow-decorated cookies for next week's "National Coming Out Day" observance at a nearby university campus. Stockton told the caller he did not feel comfortable in supporting homosexual values, especially because it would not set a good example for his two daughters.

Micah Clark of the American Family Association of Indiana says there are reports the city might evict Stockton, citing a local "anti-discrimination" statute.

"If this were a Muslim-owned bakery, what would happen?" he wonders. "I don't think the city would pursue it the way they're pursuing it now. I think this is part of the liberal agenda where people must conform to the views that our culture wants in support of homosexuality."

-snip-

To make rainbow cookies for a special event with which the company has a disagreement -- I think that goes beyond the pale of what we should expect companies to do."

Meanwhile, homosexual groups are circulating memos encouraging people to stop purchasing at Just Cookies. Clark's response to that is to ask residents to do business there in support of the owners and their wholesome beliefs.

“This, from a group demanding “tolerance””

Typical of the Left, the Libs is to spew the bile that is themselves upon others.

So a gay group goes to a place called “JUST Cookies” and orders cupcakes.

What, there are NO other bakeries in Indianapolis???
Perhaps a bakery that actually makes cupcakes?

This is another hit job by the rainbow mafia.

“...From that, we get the Americans with Disabilities Act (you have to spend $100,000 on a wheelchair ramp because someday someone with a wheelchair might want to browse your store)..”

As an amputee (and a combat veteran of two tours in Vietnam) I STRONGLY resent your comment above...It is NOT a choice to become handicapped...

Actually this may have more to do with contract law than it does with politics.

Take a hike. I resent your grabbing at some Grand Order of Victimology medal.

No one is saying ignore those who do have handicaps. We’re happy to make reasonable accommodations.

We just don’t like spending $250,000+ to meet arcane requirements of federal run-amuckism to do what a mega-office of FEDGOV dweebs think must be done.

I'm sorry if I offended.

I know it's not a choice to be handicapped. It's not a choice to be black either. The civil rights activists forced business owners to cater to them, even when the business owners did not want to. I think that's a shame. The ADA forces businesses to build accommodations for the handicapped. I'm sure you disagree, but I see that as government intervention and I think it works against property rights of business owners.

The actual story here, of course, is about homosexuals, and I do see that as a matter of choice -- which provides an even stronger argument for why a business should not have to cater to homosexual activists.

I strongly oppose anyone who claims that homosexuals are part of a civil rights struggle, "just like Martin Luther King". I think that's abhorrent.
I do recognize that the handicapped are part of a civil rights struggle. I may not agree with you on the ADA, but I would not lump you in with the homosexual activists.

I say it all the time: The lunch counter sit-ins from the civil rights movement were a very bad thing.

No they weren't, it was about a person's characteristics, something they were born with, that had absolutely nothing to do about their character.

On the other hand, this is about behavior, and value systems, which is a choice. I'm not talking about whether or not being gay is a choice or not, but the choice to be 'in your face' about it.

Yep, exactly. Of course it isn't just about having homosexuality crammed down our throats but the Marxist/liberal agenda overall. In fact it is blatantly anti Western European, White & Christain. A totalitarian state. White men used to take a stand...now?

The vast majority of blacks are offended when gays try to link their cause with that of the Civil Rights movement, it’s one reason why blacks vote against Gay Marriage in much greater numbers than whites.

I don’t see this changing much after 11/2 because it appears that both parties have a love affair with the evil homosexual agenda.

Further, not being labeled a ‘meccaphobe, as well as not being labeled a homophobe appears to these PC-minded careerists as tabu.

As soon as they get to that cesspool on the Potomac they lose their minds and their moral compasses.

“It is NOT a choice to become handicapped...”

However it is a choice to enter property owned by another individual. You would also have the choice to risk your own sweat and capital to start a business to cater to a market, specifically to other handicapped individuals.

The government meddling in private property and business decisions has done far more harm than good. This article is not even the logical conclusion of that meddling. It will get worse. Now, take it back to the root cause and you will see that the original poster has a very valid point.

‘They’ can take their tolerance and shove it where they shove other things that don’t belong.

This is the reason I was a little miffed at the “disabilities” section of your post...
