Doctor shortage amplified with Obama health care system
Radio Vice Online ^ | Oct. 1, 2010 | Steve McGough

Eleven months ago, I wrote about the future physician shortage mentioned in the Wall Street Journal. This was prior to the passage of the Democrat-owned health care legislation and nobody wanted to discuss the issue. A study by the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) notes the shortage will now be worse than expected.

For a variety of reasons, the physician shortage is expected to be 50 percent worse than originally expected. Low Medicare reimbursement rates, the increased cost of education, and the fact Congress FROZE the number of Medicare-sponsored resident programs in 1997 are just some of the issues.

AAMC expects a shortage of 130,000 docs within 15 years.

But Obama said you can keep your healthcare plan.

Obama said you can keep your doctor if you want to.

What Obama didn’t say is that you can keep your healthplan if your employer still offers it, and/or the healthplan itself is still in business.

And Obama didn’t say what would happen if the doctor you want to continue seeing retires due to the new hassles of the law, and there is no replacement doctor in that medical practice to keep you as a patient.

Obamacare was supposed to become more popular as people learned more about it. What happened? This is a big bump on the road to the nirvana of socialized medicine.

Who is going to put in the time and money to go to medical school so they can be a slave to the electronic medical record computer program.
All you need to be is something between a computer nerd and a DMV employee. See, they’re already looking to do HIV+ testing in the DC area. Perfect.

“the fact Congress FROZE the number of Medicare-sponsored resident programs in 1997”

BEFORE they froze the training slots in 1997, they CUT them all by 25% in 1990 or 1991 after a pilot program in NY State of one year. The reduction of physicians in all specialties has been deliberate.

We don’t need no doctors. We’ll all be seeing “health-care providers”.

The misguided effort to force more doctors and medical school students into primary care will contribute to the shortage. If you have any substantial ailment, you generally must see a specialist. I cannot get my daughter’s pediatrician to manage her lupus care. I think that I know more about lupus than he does. At least, I have a strong interest in learning more about lupus.

I cannot get a timely appointment with the specialist. Of course, I can go outside my health plan’s network if I want to pay out of my own pocket. I see the same problem with socialized medicine. As reimbursement rates get cut (price controls), supply of specialized medical care will decline. The problem will exacerbate as health care rights increase demand. You will be forced to fund medical care out of pocket to get care. Of course, the left will try to stop this practice directly or indirectly. The left can punish providers who will not treat government subsidized patients. The indian reservations may become a refuge for quality health care.

With the intended destruction of private coverage insurance companies, a majority of MDs will be out of practice.

My cardiologist said to look for lots of doctors coming from Cuba.

Obama and the liberals think it’s not fair that the entire world doesn’t have as many doctors as the U.S. so we need to spread the doctors around.
