They smoked industrial hemp, often called Cannabis Sativa, a variant so low in THC and high in CBD which blocks the marijuana effects, that one cannot get high from it.
Only Cannabis high in THC is suitable for Marijuana. The strain sometimes called Cannabis Indica is grown for pot production.
