BIG GREEN COMET: The icy nucleus of comet 103P/Hartley 2 measures no more than a couple of kilometers across. That tiny nugget, however, is surrounded by an vast atmosphere of gas more than 150,000 km in diameter--about the same size as the planet Jupiter! And it's coming our way. Amateur astronomer Nick Howes sends this picture of the approaching comet from Cherhill, WIltshire UK:

"I photographed the comet on Oct. 1st using a 4-inch refractor," says Howes. "Four hours of exposure time revealed not only the comet's vast green atmosphere but also an emerging tail." Howes describes the processing of the data here.

At present, the comet is a 7th-magnitude object best seen through telescopes. (We recommend the Comet Hunter.) The view will improve, perhaps even to naked-eye visibility, as the comet glides by Earth only 11 million miles away on Oct. 20th.

Two weeks after Comet Hartley has its close encounter with Earth, NASA will have a close encounter with the comet. The Deep Impact/EPOXI spacecraft is hurtling toward Comet Hartley now, and on Nov. 4th it will fly 435 miles from the comet's active icy nucleus. The encounter will mark only the fifth time in history that a spacecraft has been close enough to image a comet's core.

Until then, amateur astronomers can monitor the comet as it glides through the constellation Cassiopeia in the evening sky. A finder chart from Sky and Telescope shows the comet passing by a variety of stars and deep-sky objects, offering many photo-ops in the nights ahead.

COMET HARTLEY 2 UPDATE: Some observers are reporting that comet 103P/Hartley 2 has reached the threshold of naked eye visibility. “I was able to see the comet last night under very dark and transparent skies,” says Kevin Koski of Cascade, Wisconsin. Veteran observer Mike Holloway of Van Buren, Arkansas, adds that “the comet was almost ‘naked eye’ with averted vision on Oct. 2nd.” In the nights ahead, telescopic observers are encouraged to lift their eyes from the optics to attempt a sighting.

APPROACHING COMET: Green comet 103P/Hartley 2 is approaching Earth for a close encounter on Oct. 20th. At that time, the comet will be only 11 million miles from Earth and should be dimly visible to the naked eye from dark sky sites. It already looks great through backyard telescopes:

The science websites are all a-flutter with the greeen comet. Yet, none cater to the amateur viewer by giving a simple “direction and elevation above the horizon” explanation for viewing.

More usefully, here is an image of the so-called “666” from the Codex Vaticanus of Revelation which dates to around 350 AD - 200 to 300 years after John wrote Revelation. These marks are often - and erroneously - interpreted as '666' when they are in fact a simple image.

Let's look at that again:

That design is common in Islam. It is a pair of crossed swords next to the Bismallah - the Name of Allah.

And what about the Mark of the Beast being worn on arm and head? Was St John talking of headbands and armbands?

It's not very clear, but you can just make out the X-shaped swords and the middle symbol on this piece of material:

And if we pull out a bit, we get the whole thing - this is an image of a armband belonging to Hamas:

Those particles have been blasted off the comet by the solar wind, forming (depending on their size and type) its tail and halo. They won't stay with the comet.

Actually, here in suburban Chicago, Cassiopeia looks like a single bright star (naked eye). I can make out some whole constellations with my binoculars.

I’m hoping to use them to see beyond some of the “light pollution” and pick out Hartley.
