Conservatives and RomneyCare
American Spectator ^ | 10.6.10 | Philip Klein

Posted on 10/06/2010 5:55:18 PM PDT by Leisler

Piggybacking off of this Politico article on conservatives attacking RomneyCare, Jon Chait asks why in 2008, "nearly all (conservatives) were fine with Romney's health care plan."

If you were reading the National Review -- which had a soft spot for Mitt -- I can see why you would have that impression, but the reality is a lot more complicated.

For starters, there were a lot of conservatives who did raise issues about his health care plan, and we published a lot of them here at the Spectator. I was a frequent critic of both Romney and his health care plan, as was Dave Hogberg, who devoted a column to the issue in 2007 called "Mitt's Biggest Flop." The Club for Growth, in its evaluation of Romney's record during the primaries, blasted RomneyCare, writing, "Commonwealth Care is a far cry from free-market healthcare. Besides the individual and employer mandates, the program expands Medicaid, does not deregulate enough, and will likely cost more than the current system..."

Jon Stait is a being moronic. Very few if any conservatives thought anything good about RomneyCare.

This is why I am very reluctant to vote for Republicans that hail from very blue states. They tend to carry a lot of liberal ideas with them.

Well, you know, we have these ‘compassionate conservatives’ that love big gov, big tax..

Everybody, tax spending, more law making hack is calling themselves conservative now a days.

I predict the popularization of a RINO like term along the lines of “CINO”, Conservative In Name Only.

Newt did, sort of, pretty much.

Well, one only exists in the MSM mind if they say you do. Otherwise you are a extremist, kid kicker, teabagger, out side the pale non-person.

THE HC Romney question is an easy answer.....It was a Ma. States right issue NOT a national conservative issue....Geez, it was a local issue in Kennnedy’s home state.

Let the locals of Mass. Learn what the other 49 states already know.

Who are we to tell Mass. How stupid they appear ? Enter Scott Brown, lesson learned without Conservative Adult Supervision.

It’s a Romney/National issue, which was always a Romney issue as Mitt always as his dad, wanted to be President. Mass Governorship was just bush league ticket punching for him.

"nearly all (conservatives) were fine with Romney's health care plan."

Here's a conservative that detests not just this but all the plans of the plastic-coiffed gun banner, from stem to stern. Romney can take his Romneycare and go back to Taxachusetts for all I care. Sarah is my vote in 2012, whether she's on the ballot or not.

Because the other options were McCain and Huck?

I guess that doesn’t explain Hugh Hewitt’s shameless watercarrying form almost the moment Romney declared his candidacy; but seriously, the 2008 choices all sucked.

Those clowns aren't talking about what you and I and the rest of us anti-establishment kooks at FreeRepublic think. They're talking to and about each other.
