Anatomy of the Obama Meltdown
National Review Online ^ | 7 Oct 2010 | Victor Davis Hanson

Posted on 10/07/2010 1:43:50 AM PDT by Rummyfan

Had the Obamites been sober and circumspect after the 2008 election they would have realized that Obama had pulled off what McGovern, Mondale, Dukakis, and Kerry had not, due to a once-in-a-century perfect storm of about six events:

1) The September 15, 2008 financial meltdown that destroyed John McCain’s small, but steady lead.

2) The fascination with a possible landmark election of an African American candidate.

3) The inept McCain campaign that at times seemed more to wish to lose nobly than to win in a messy fashion.

4) The adroit Obama campaign that stressed centrist, “across the aisle” issues and style.

5) The “tingle in the leg” biased media coverage.

6) The first election without an incumbent or vice president since 1952 in which both candidates ran against the status quo Republican record.

Instead, Obama — egged on by obsequious advisers, an out-of-touch, hard-left base, and a toady media — decided that he had done what other Northern liberals had not, either because (a) the country was at last ready for European-style socialism, or (b) his singular charisma and talents could convince it that it was even when it was clearly not.

The result was that our Oedipus/Pentheus rushed headlong into socialized medicine, mega-deficits, needlessly polarizing appointments of the Van Jones type, and various federal takeovers, coupled with quite unnecessary editorializing about largely local matters — from the Skip Gates mess to the Arizona immigration law and Ground Zero mosque.

In each case, the supposed uniter deliberately weighed in on these controversies to quite unfairly demonize his opponents — “stupidly” acting police, Arizona xenophobes picking up children on the way to buy ice cream, Islamophobes wanting to deny religious liberty, etc. A thousand other nicks, from Eric Holder’s “nation of cowards” to Obama’s musings that at some point one needs no more income, ensured continual bleeding as his poll numbers fell by nearly 30 points in just 20 months.

The result was that the president soon lost the moral capital to push through an unpopular agenda — to such a degree that his out-of-the-mainstream views and his polarizing style of governance might well destroy Democratic congressional majorities for a decade.

As in all Greek tragedies, we the audience can see what might have happened had Obama avoided hubris and its attendant nemesis: If, from the get-go, he had focused on jobs; avoided talking about tax hikes; postponed health care; controlled spending; worried about rising deficits; avoided the “them vs. us” rhetoric; and stayed Olympian and aloof when polarizing local controversies grabbed the cable TV headlines.

And now? After November, Obama can only hope that he can outsource the messy work of cuts and budget balancing to the congressional Republicans. Chances are he will demagogue them as heartless while taking credit for an economic rebound once investors, businesses, and corporations see an end to Obamism and its gratuitous slurs against the wealthy, and thus start using their stockpiled trillions to rehire and buy equipment in 2011.

In the meantime, an entire generation of Democratic House members and senators are going to pay a heavy price for falling for a clearly inexperienced, untried, and often petulant candidate amid the exuberance of the 2008 hope and change wave.

This is a very good analysis.

“House members and senators are going to pay a heavy price for falling for a clearly inexperienced, untried, and often petulant candidate amid the exuberance of the 2008 hope and change wave.”

I believe this piece was posted several hours ago, but worth repeating.

I would add to it. They failed to acknowledge the obvious and well known, but often ignored fact that Obama is a MARXIST/COMMUNIST.

Sort of. Hanson is treating Obama as if he were normal, but he’s not. Obama’s crazy, he’s hated the US from the very start, and it was his intention all along to destroy us and Islamicize us.

The things that Hanson says may apply to some of the left-wing radicals surrounding Obama, who were the adroit ones who managed to slip their socialist program in with a sociopathic candidate whose very instability and unreality made the press love him. The chameleon-like qualities of a sociopath enabled his followers to see in him exactly whatever they wanted to see, generally the perfect left-wing high-melanin candidate they had always dreamed of.

But Obama himself despises both his political supporters and the press. He sees himself as divinely annointed for the destruction of the Great Satan, and anyone who thinks this is politics as usual is missing the whole issue.

Obama is toxic. Few candidates want his support. Obama is sneaking into NJ to do a fund-raiser for the DNC-—not for any one Dem candidate.

Just about a year ago, Obama made several visits to NJ, appeared in relentless ads, and ordered the WH take over incumbent Gov Corzine’s reelection campaign.

OBAMA WAS DESPERATE FOR DEM CORZINE TO WIN. Obama was heavily invested in the NJ gubernatorial race-—one of only two statewide races that were a test for Obama’s policies. Virginia also elected a Republican. Obama campaigned in NJ three times, Biden was there twice. Obama TV ads ran relentlessly on costly NY media.

Obama put the power of the WH political machine behind Corzine. The NY Times reported:

(a) every TV ad Corzine put on the air was being screened by Obama’s WH “geniuses.”

(b) Corzine’s aides gave the WH daily briefings.

(c) Obama’s pollsters took over for Corzine’s polling team, and,

(d) White House operatives were on the ground for internal strategy sessions.

All of it led to Corzine‘s humiliating defeat.

Democrats face a series of dramatic defeats at every level of government in Washington and beyond in Nov midterms, according to leading analysts and opinion polls. The U of Virginia’s widely monitored Crystal Ball forecasts sweeping setbacks on Capitol Hill and the loss of a clutch of state governorships Nov 2.

Such is the scale of the expected losses, that according to local polls, Democrats are on course to lose the governorships of left-leaning states such as Michigan and Pennsylvania..............and may be vulnerable in Illinois, long a Dem party bastion, and home to Ohaha and his WH crew.

" Holy Allah. Illinois? Gone? Get that little twerp Rahm
in here. Him and his permanent Democrat majority."

According to Bob Woodard, Obama thinks he’s the smartest person in the room, including when the advisors are designing strategy for Afghanistan This nullifies my hope that his advisors would keep him in check.

What is so frightening about this is he has all the power but knows so little and is too stupid and arrogant to realize how little he knows

The damage has been done. The government in 18 months pretty much nationalized healthcare(a goal), Protected unions with federal tax dollars (a goal), destroyed the banking system (a goal) took over companies (a goal), and raised taxes across the board (in january, goal will be accomplished).

Obama could care less if Republicans take back the house and the senate. There won’t be enough in the senate to override a veto, plus because everything is being done by Presidential mandates, with a kneepad wearing circuit court system, not much will change.

Basically for Obama it is “mission accomplished.”

Most of them are still learning those labels. By 2012 they’ll be able to give the definition without googling it.

I agree with much of what you wrote, but I don’t think Obama wants to destroy the US in the way that a Jihadist might. I think he wants to humble the US, totally change the societal structure, and demote us to just another member of the UN. I believe his simplistic and dogmatic worldview makes it nearly impossible for him to recognize or admit that differences in outcome are often explained by differences in effort, or to cultural meltdown. To him, the ‘haves’ have because they have been unfairly favored over the ‘have nots’. He thinks he’s Robinhood.

Mccain was arthritic. The VP was the better candidate. Romney would have beat Obama maybe...

On the other hand...Hansen is right, the stars were aligned for Obama, plus the inept campaign of Hillary.

WHat I don’t understand is the commotion now, 2 years before the election, of Hillary running as VP.

Doesn’t make sense. I don’t see that happening. I see Obama’s polls going down, the economy worse....and Hillary running on her own against him, along with many others.

I also see some democrats crossing over to the republican side.

Obama looks very small to many of us. AS soon as that trickles down to the media, watch out, as they will then have the courage to ask the important questions.

No one, not one person has ever given him a tough interview....not like the ones Bush would get....

This guy is a coward....and a phony. What bothers me about liberals is that at least if they were honest you could debate them. They’re sneaky. He had to appear moderate to get elected.

In simpler terms, Barry wants to humble whitey, who have unjustly stolen all their goods from the black man, Mexicans, American Indians, blah, blah, blah. His greatest miscalculation is who is going to pay the taxes after whitey is humbled. Minor detail.

Might be what is needed to wipe out the rest in 2012. I can’t imagine the nation electing this guy again. I think anyone will beat him. IF Hilary is on board, it will galvanize all of us to vote.

In fact, I think Jerry Falwell would climb out of the grave to vote against her....

1) The September 15, 2008 financial meltdown that destroyed John McCain’s small, but steady lead.

IMHO there was no meltdown. McC is using the 2008 money collected to keep his seat in the senate.

The question remains,

Do they realize what a Socialist, Marxist, Communist, Liberal, Progressive POS their "party" is?

You know it is really kind of quirky that we talk about and are acting to "take our party back," from the RINO's and progressive moles.

When really, in the grand scheme of things, it is the democrats that need to "take their own party back." There is no forward, future, hope or change, in a party overrun by philosophies from what is the fringe of the political spectrum in America.
