ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - Ridership on the New Mexico Rail Runner Express is down over 10 percent from this time a year ago.
But those in charge of the commuter train aren't overly concerned.
There were 41,176 fewer riders from July through September of 2010 than there were during the same time a year ago.
Rail Runner officials said the decline can be attributed to a drop off in weekend ridership, not weekday commuters.

Numbers mixed in Rail Runner ridership report (NM-Richardon's Railroad)
The Democrat Senate candidate in FL (U.S. Rep. Kendrick Meek) was interviewed on Fox this a.m. When he was asked about providing jobs for the middle class he used the example of high speed rail in Florida - of course to be funded from the federal government (i.e. all of us). BTW, its only supposed to go from St. Pete/Tampa to Orlando and would not make intermediate stops.
Idiots -- still haven't learned that the federal government is BROKE!!
I recall some posters on past threads on Dollar Bill’s choo choo stating that a significant percentage of the ridership was communting state employees.
The Rail Runner was supposed to be for the commuters who can’t afford to live in pricey Santa FE and in fact it stops at the biggest concentration of state government offices in Santa Fe.

Incidentally there’s something the NM State Constitution says about rail transportation and members of our state government:
Article IV – Legislative Department
Sec. 37. [Railroad passes.]
It shall not be lawful for a member of the legislature to use a pass, or to purchase
or receive transportation over any railroad upon terms not open to the general public;
and the violation of this section shall work a forfeiture of the office.
Article XX – Miscellaneous
Sec. 14. [Public officers barred from using railroad passes.]
It shall not be lawful for the governor, any member of the state board of equalization,
any member of the corporation commission [public regulation commission], any judge of
the supreme or district court, any district attorney, any county commissioner or any
county assessor, during his term of office to accept, hold or use any free pass; or
purchase, receive or accept transportation over any railroad within this state for
himself or his family upon terms not open to the general public; and any person
violating the provisions hereof shall, upon conviction in a court of a competent
jurisdiction, be punished as provided in Sections Thirty-Seven and Forty of the article
on Legislative Department in this constitution.

I'm quite sure that there's a simple, reasonable explanation for all this. If anybody has one, Willie's sure to be the person who does.

Unknown; all my searches on the subject brought up nil one way or the other... then again I’m not the best researcher.

No, but you can get a monthly pass and a lower fare if you buy online. But it really doesn't matter -- the fare is so cheap ($9 for a 200 mile all day roundtrip; less if you buy online or are a senior, disabled, etc.) that just about anyone can afford a ticket. And for most state office workers who live in the Rio Rancho area it's $6 one way, $7 roundtrip.
The balance of the cost is paid by the good people of NM.
I think the only surprise to those of us on the NM ping list is that the numbers aren’t much worse.
(of course we don’t know , really, how much these numbers are ‘massaged’ away from reality.)

Too bad that the NM Constitution is just as meaningless to our State Overlords as the US Constitution is to the Federal Overlords.
