WASHINGTON (AFP) The US Treasury mistakenly sent more than 20 million dollars in stimulus payments to dead people and prisoners as part of an effort to jolt the US economy out of recession, an investigation has found.
The 2009 American Recovery and Investment Act authorized one-time 250 dollar payments to about 52 million people, totalling 13 billion dollars.
But an inspector general's investigation found that more than 71,000 of the checks -- worth 18 million dollars -- went out to people who had died.
...
"Inaccurate payments are unacceptable," said Mark Lassiter, a spokesman for the Social Security Administration, ..
He said, however, that the payments "were 99.8 percent accurate and we quickly collected the majority of the inaccurate payments."

Did Nicky Diaz, former housekeeper for Meg Whitman get a check? Her SSN didn’t match her name, but would not bet she didn’t get one. Anyone know how to find out?
Ya gotta, they're still votin'...... Demorat.
I also wonder if the mailing out of all those checks to dead people was done intentionally. It sure did stimulate the postal economy and created more work for the mailmen. Then someone was paid to research why those checks were undeliverable.
Well, how did they get on the mailing list in the first place? Wouldn’t these be people already receiving SS or some other benefits, so what happened to those?
I never received a payment!
Not to defend this, but there’s some time lag between the time a person dies and the time SSA becomes aware of it. So it’s inevitable that some payments are going to be sent to dead people for this reason alone.
Sounds like ACORN somehow got access to Social Security records.
Why haven’t I received?
Did these dead people cash the checks?
Maybe in some cases but my father died on the 2nd day of the month and his SS check usually arrived on the 3rd day of the month. The Post Office in his town returned the envelope marked Deceased.
They may be required to do so if they are aware of a death.
We didn’t get any of those $250 SS booster checks and we are both on SS hubby is 70.
Your father’s SS check was for the month previous so he was due that check. When a person gets the check it is a month behind. Only if it was the next month would the post office have been in the right to send it back and I;’m not sure even then. They have to deliver any letters until it is told not to.
