I think you will find that when it comes to roommates, the law has a very high bar when it comes to claims of "invasion of" or "expectation of" privacy.

Now, concerning the computer ~ the university recommends that the students provide their own security systems for them. The equipment used for that purpose pretty much constitutes a common security system.

I doubt any charges will stick against either party.

The university is going to have to do SOMETHING. The gays will probably be happy to overlook any punishment of the perps (they are, after all, non-white) but they will be wanting all sorts of goodies. Probably a new raft of hate-speech codes, an endowed chair or two, more moola for the GLBT clubs and maybe an entire department.
