How evil was Ted Kennedy? Shocking new details have emerged, now that the man himself is dead.
While many conservatives realized that Ted Kennedy's was a morally compromised man (his record of walking away from Mary Jo Kopechne as she suffocated in an air bubble inside his Oldsmobile clinched the case), America's major media studiously ignored the incident, and many others, in order to preserve the luster of the Kennedy name, and to aid him in his role as the liberal "lion of the Senate."
Now, the son the then-owner of the National Enquirer has provided information which, if true, adds a new dimension to understanding of Kennedy and the media which abetted him. The New York Post writes:
Teddy Kennedy quashed a National Enquirer story alleging Mary Jo Kopechne was pregnant with his child when she died by giving the weekly a fawning article about Jackie Kennedy Onassis and her kids, a new book claims.
In Paul Pope's "The Deeds of My Fathers," he claims his father, Generoso (Gene) Pope, who turned the Enquirer into the best-selling tabloid in America, spiked a story that reported Kopechne, the pretty young campaign worker, was pregnant in 1969 when she drowned in the Chappaquiddick River in Kennedy's car.
Pope writes that his father sent a reporter to DC in 1980 to buy the story from Washington Post gossip columnist Maxine Cheshire and a Women's Wear Daily reporter. The story detailing the alleged coverup included on-the-record sources, with every quote attributed.
So Kennedy not only let his young mistress die when he walked away and spent a night prior to notifying authorities, he also got rid of a child who could have become a serious embarrassment, as well as a financial burden. The mechanics of paying for an illegitimate child snagged even a superlawyer like John Edwards. Perhaps Kennedy family fixers could have handled a Kopechne child with greater finesses, had Catholic Mary Jo decided to keep her baby, rather than kill it via abortion. But it still could have spelled trouble ahead, especially if Mary Jo became demanding of his time and attention, as mistresses have been known to do.
How very conventient that mother and child both were removed from the ranks of the living.
The incident also illustrates the way the Kennedy family traded on its glamour to shape news coverage favorably. In this, they no doubt learned a lot from the Hollywood studios, which routinely covered up embarrassing stories about stars by trading access to sources. Teddy's father Joe Kennedy was very active in the movie business, as well as with female stars.
Now that the mood of the American people is shifting to cynicism and anger toward those who have been pulling off a giant political con job for decades, and now that the Kennedy family glamour quotient is dependent on the likes of Caroline Kennedy, whose "ya know" locutions were so pathetic that even New York voters found her laughable as a potential senator, it is time to expose the real evil of Ted Kennedy, waitress sandwich and all, to the American people, and mark him as the villain he was. The revisionist history of the Kennedy clan is a narrative whose time has come.

I tend to agree, buts its fun to speculate. Chappaquidddick ended his Presidential hopes. If he had been anything but a Kennedy from MA, it WOULD also have also ended his political career.

Not that LBJ has anything to do with the thread and no, he wasn't hated by everyone but whatever. I will never believe he killed Kennedy and here's why. LBJ and Ladybird's best friends Texas Gov. Connally and his wife Nellie were both in the car with Kennedy. Connally was also shot. The Johnsons and the Connallys were THE VERY BEST OF FRIENDS, not just during his presidency, but until the days they died. They were neighbors for many years and bought weekend lake homes on Lake LBJ in Llano county in Texas across from each other. Nearly every Friday evening, LBJ would fly in by helicopter and fly up the lake before landing at the house and then boat up and down the lake. They would relax and have cookouts together. Now, tell me, if you knew your best friend was a murderer would you party with him and move your family next to him? Sure, LBJ was crooked and a womanizer but I don't think Lady Bird would have allowed him to harm Nellie. You seriously believe Nellie would have allowed her kids and grandkids around him if she and John had come that close to being killed? How do I know? Well, I know if his belly button was an innie or an outie and leave it at that.

I'm not certain what they showed was all grief. I remember the parents wouldn't allow any autopsy. It's never been successfully explained to me why they should have been granted the choice. From what was known at the time it should have been a coroner's case with autopsy mandatory. But somehow the legal niceties, like the later 'discovered,' but much ignored, fact that Teddy was driving with a lapsed license, thus upping his deserved charge. At least, after all these years, Massachusetts is back to having only one untried felon illegitimately serving in the Senate.

I’m not that cynical, I just think young women in their 20’s can be very naive. Hero-worshippers of Kennedys in 1969 included.
When the coroner’s report says she was pregnant with Kennedy spawn, I’ll believe it. Until then, a victim who’s been drowned need not be p***ed on afterwards.
I don’t think I believe this.
A) Why would Mary Jo want MORE of Kennedy after he did what he did to her? Her life would be ruined and she would not be out partying and possibly driving to the beach to fool around with him, in her 1st trimester.
B) Kennedy would probably want to “fix” her problem but sleep with other women, not his pregnant mistress. This would mean that he was there only to FAKE his partying and sneaking her out of the house. This only makes sense if:
C) He meant to flip the car on that bridge, while intoxicated. He is too dumb to pull an Evil Canevil (sp?) with no practice. If the car had ended up right side up, she would have survived. It’s a dumb way to kill someone; he could have afforded a hitman to make it look like she was killed in a mugging.
So I do not believe she was pregnant. I believe he had not ever gotten into her pants and thus was drunkenly motivated to do so. The ferry was long gone so he could ONLY have been driving her to the beach to “watch the submarine races.”

There was a story not too long ago about John Kennedy's love child who now lives in Canada. He looked very much like John. He also made clear that he has his own life and was not interested in pursuing the Kennedy connection.
