In the same way as the economic stimulus is saving the economy, even as economic indicators go the wrong way. Geeze, as bad as things are, just think how much worse they'd be without stimuli, bailouts, forgiven mortgages, etc. Similarly, just think of how much more Obama would smoke if he weren't doing such a swell job at quitting.
