Chile's President Sebastian Pinera and the country's first lady have arrived at a remote mine hours ahead of an attempt to rescue the first of 33 miners trapped hundreds of metres below the surface.
The president and his wife, Cecilia Morel, have been meeting families of the trapped miners, many of whom have held vigil at nearby "Camp Hope" since their loved ones were trapped by a collapse at the mine more than nine weeks ago.
More than 600 metres underground, the 33 Chilean miners are preparing for the ride of their lives as rescuers prepare to bring them to the surface.
Mining Minister Laurence Golborne said that rescue workers "hope to have at least one of our miners on the surface" by Tuesday night.

I hope they keep the bright lights and cameras far back, respecting privacy and the fragility of the miners....
God be with those miners.
I wanna see the reaction of the wives/mistresses faces...

In a different day and age, Jeff Hart would be the most famous American in our country right now. He would be honored at the White House. Schoolchildren would learn of his skill and heroism. But because Jeff Hart works in an industry under fire by the Obama administration, more people in Chile will celebrate this symbol of American greatness than in American itself.
Jeff Hart is a driller based in my home state of Colorado. The father of two has been drilling water wells in Afghanistan at U.S. Army bases. When the San Jose Mine in Chile collapsed in August, he flew to lend his renowned expertise to the rescue effort. As part of an amazing three-way race to the trapped miners, Hart drilled for 33 days straight and was first to reach the caved-in workers. The AP recounts the story and what strikes me again and again is how the world turned to American ingenuity and American fortitude and American equipment and American enterprise to get the job done:

The families are together nearby, singing and praying.
Bless you Mr. Hart.
Thanks for making America proud.
Aw heck no. Not on Telemundo. Some ample chested woman is going to grab them as they come out of the chute and run them up to the front for some game show fun. This is Latin America!
Amazing!
Chile is the most conservative country in LatAm and Obama hates it - which is why we offered almost no help and offered it very late after the Chilean earthquake in February.

After three years at Harvard, Piñera graduated with both a M.A. and Ph.D. in Economics
Piñera then matriculated at the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile to undertake his undergraduate degree in Economics, from which he graduated in 1971. Upon graduation, he was awarded the Raúl Iver Oxley Prize which is given to the best overall student of each class.[4]
Piñera continued on to study at Harvard University on a partial Fulbright Program for his postgraduate studies in economics. During his time at Harvard, Piñera and a classmate co-authored an article entitled, “The Old South’s Stake in the Inter-Regional Movement of Slaves” for the Journal of Economic History.[5] He also worked as a teaching fellow during 1975 and 1976[citation needed]. After three years at Harvard, Piñera graduated with both a M.A. and Ph.D. in Economics. His thesis was entitled, “The Economics of Education in Developing Countries.”[6]
They are going to do test runs first.
Actual rescue attempt won’t start for about 2 hours.
