Remember when Jerry Brown tried to give Jane Fonda a job with the state of California?
The California GOP wants you to.
In an e-mail sent Wednesday, the state party points out an Oct. 13, 1981, Los Angeles Times story about Browns defense of a spate of controversial 1979 appointments he made in part to generate left-wing support for his nascent primary challenge to then-President Jimmy Carter.
This year, Brown, a Democrat, is running for his old job as governor against former eBay CEO Meg Whitman, a Republican. Brown held the governorship from 1975 until 1983and the GOPs reminder, 29 years to the day after the clip appeared in print, is part of an ongoing campaign to paint Brown as a retread with decades of irredeemable baggage.
More than three decades ago, in 1979, Brown named Fonda to the California Arts Council but the state Senate rejected her appointment. By all standards by which I was raised, Fonda was guilty of having committed treason, one state senator said at the time, according to a September 1979 account of the flap in TIME Magazine.
He was referring to the infamous photos of the movie star on top of a North Vietnamese tank at the height of the conflict, a pose that earned her the nickname Hanoi Jane.
At the time, according to the magazine story, Brown denounced the senate as a group of small-minded politicians, and Fonda accused them of McCarthyism.
Fonda wasnt the only controversial appointment Brown made in the late 1970s. The flap over Fonda was sparked in part because Brown also named Edison Miller, a former Vietnam POW who was investigated for collaborating with the North Vietnamese, to the Orange County Board of Supervisors. Fonda met Miller when she was doing radio broadcasts from Hanoi during the war and recommended him for the job, according to the TIME story.
Brown defended all of his picks, according to the 1981 Los Angeles Times story. Its better to bring controversy into the arena of decision-making than to keep it underground, Brown said.
Besides, Brown said, yesterdays radicals tends to mellow over time, the paper wrote.
Hey, a commie sandwich.
Absolutely!
Jane probably gave him a ‘job’ and that’s how he got the name Moonbeam. A little family friendly name, you know.
But being a traitor to your country lasts forever.
I thought Jane called him little stubby?
Jane Fonda likes it long and hard. Just ask the Vietnamese Army.
It is beyond any doubt that she should have been tried and hung for treason.
I couldn’t agree more!
He was referring to the infamous photos of the movie star on top of a North Vietnamese tankI don't think it was a tank, I think it was an anti-aircraft gun.
I think you’re exactly right, to me there’s no more infamous pic than that.
This story will have no impact. If Brown were Governor today, and appointed Fonda to that office, she’d be confirmed.
Thanks for posting.
You’re probably right but it’s always good to remind people of her traitorous behavior and the politicians that accepted her afterword, Brown is scum.
Good one! Guess it goes back to the old definition of being nailed.
Jane’s probably had a few job offers in her time.
Moonbeam was one of many!
