AOL, private equity firms explore Yahoo! purchase: WSJ

WASHINGTON (AFP) – AOL and several private equity firms are exploring the possibility of buying Yahoo!, The Wall Street Journal reported Wednesday.

The newspaper said Silver Lake Partners and Blackstone Group are among the firms that have expressed interest in either teaming up with AOL to buy Yahoo! or trying to take it private on their own.

The Journal, citing "people familiar with the matter," said at least two or three other companies could be interested in participating if a formal buyout proposal is drawn up.

The newspaper said the discussions involving private-equity firms, AOL executives and financial advisers are preliminary and do not yet involve Yahoo!

It noted that AOL, which spun off from Time Warner last year, has a market capitalization of 2.68 billion dollars far smaller than Yahoo's 20.56 billion dollars.

One scenario is a complex deal in which China's Alibaba Group would buy back Yahoo!'s roughly 40 percent stake in the company, the Journal said.

In my opinion AOL is a company that truely deserves to go out of business. Despicable service, fraudulent charges and consumate liars. Nothing they could purchase would correct those shortcomings.

Yes, and I use AOL! It has better email than Yahoo, Roadrunner, Gmail, hotmail, etc, etc. I say AOL email leaves the above named junk mail in the dust! So, there!

That’s interesting. Yahoo is completely off line right now. First I thought my computer was having problems, but I went to Twitter and other people are having the same thing.
