GALLATIN, Tenn. - It was a position held by a democrat for 25 years, but now the 6th District Congressional seat is up for grabs. On Thursday night, candidates Diane Black and Brett Carter faced off in their first debate where things got heated, at times even hostile.
They are both fighting to get a hold of the 6th district after 13-term democrat Bart Gordon announced he will not be running for re-election this year. That decision came in part after backlash from his constituents to a "yes" vote for President Obama's health care reform plan earlier this year.
On Thursday, inside a Volunteer State auditorium in Gallatin, it was clear that the same divide over that issue exists, and it could be enough to put this long held democratic seat in the hands of a republican in a matter of weeks.
Democrat Brett Carter addressed the health care issue first. He wants to make the current plan work by crunching the numbers and finding fiscal solutions to what was already passed.
"I want to come to the table with solutions, Americans are frustrated along with me," said Carter.
But Republican Diane Black's plan, should she get to Washington, is to try and appeal the health care bill all together.
"I think people are very concerned about their health care and what they got in Obamacare' is not what they wanted," Black said.
Carter, an Iraq war veteran with a bronze star, went on to add that he is more in tune with voters than his opponent who is owns a multimillion dollar company, and who he said is another partisan politician trying to get to Washington.

"I am not a career politician. I have been a nurse for 40 years and that is longer than you've been alive," Black responded to the accusation.
The back and forth continued over how to cut the national deficit and create jobs. Carter wants to end the Bush tax cuts. Black wants to make them permanent.
If the crowd at Vol State was any indication of what's to come in November, with applause for Black and at even heckling her opponent at times, then the 6th Congressional seat could in fact go republican for the first time in decades.
"I think this was at times a hostile crowd for me but we spoke the truth on issues that were asked of us," Carter said.
How is it looking? Diane Black is an excellent candidate - hope she wins.
Black wants to “appeal” the DeathCare act. Freudian slip or plain evil by the media.
There is no appeal to we the people who will be saddled with this monstrosity for eternity.
Repealing this act, like the dependence on the courts to kill it, are slim to none. Defunding is the only option. 0bambi will propose a budget (or not) in January. The newly elected PUB majority needs to defund whole sections of the budget.
That is, unless the the “new boss, same as the old boss” was lying to get elected. “We don’t fooled again”.
With some retooling of words, this could make a good TEA party song:

Haven’t seen polls but I’m sure it has to be a pick up from what Bart Gordon left behind.
