Hillary Clinton and Baroness Ashton have revealed that in between talks on the conflict in Afghanistan or Iran's nuclear threat they discuss the really important things – children and shopping.

Henry Kissinger, one of Mrs Clinton's predecessors at the American state department, is said, to have expressed US frustration at diverging European national foreign policies by asking, "Who do I call if I want to call Europe?".

The US secretary of state said the creation of an EU foreign minister and the appointment of Lady Ashton, following the entry into force of the Lisbon Treaty last year, had answered the question to Washington's satisfaction
