Arson blamed for fire that destroyed Mormon church in Mukilteo Washington

MUKILTEO — Arson is the cause of an early morning fire that destroyed a church building next door to Kamiak High School, fire and police officials said. No one was injured in the blaze.

The Snohomish County Fire Marshal’s office, the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and Mukilteo Fire and Police departments concluded Saturday afternoon that the fire was started outside near the back entry of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints building at the corner of Harbour Pointe Boulevard and Chennault Beach Drive.

The two-alarm fire, first reported shortly before 3 a.m. Saturday, has left two Mormon congregations without a place to worship.

Firefighters at the nearby Mukilteo Fire Department responded within minutes, said Assistant Fire Chief Brian McMahan.

My guess is militant homosexuals upset at the Church for recent statements calling sin a sin.

They could start their investigation right here at FR, based on some of the downright hateful posts here about Mormons.

I wouldn’t go that far but I do hope they solve the problem before they start rebuilding it. It’s no use rebuilding if it will be burned again. Thank goodness the arsonist(s) attacked while no one was there. Someone knows the congregation enough, I suppose, to know that while the building has security lights inside, it doesn’t have a fulltime presence in the building.

But the buildings are designed to host multiple congregations in each one so doubling up won’t be much of a problem Our city once had five separate congregations sharing the same building, about the same design and size as the one here that burned, for about eighteen months as construction was going on. It was challenging but possible.

Lemme guess, this isn’t a “hate crime,” right?

Well, if they do like other LDS Church arson fires, they will rebuild, and rethink security... in that order.

This isn’t the first time, or the last.

That only applies to sex and race.

Hating Mormons is sport for many. A ‘crime’ is the last thing they would think of it being.

Can;t argue with that. The times are getting scary. I am constantly after the people of my congregation to be more careful about locking up the building, especially those with access keys for non-Sunday activities. Hubby and I constantly patrol the building for locked doors before we leave and half the time at least one door, interior or exterior, that should be locked, isn’t.

Looks like this one started on the outside. If they want to do harm, they will.

I agree, it will only get worse.

So the BATF is now investigating fires?

The ATF is regularly called in on cases suspected of being arson caused.

They have a division specifically for arson and explosives. I believe it falls under the “F” in ATF

Here's more info, from the Seattle Times, as to why the ATF was called in.

“Investigators from the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) joined the investigation Saturday because of the size of the fire and its location at a church, the assistant chief said.”
