Physician shortages widespread in state, report says

Half of primary care practices in Massachusetts are closed to new patients and wait times for appointments continue to be long, according to a new survey released today by a statewide physicians' association. The Massachusetts Medical Society, which has been polling doctors, hospital executives, and medical educators for nine years, reports that primary care doctors are in short supply for the fifth year in a row, citing pressure from the state’s 2006 law mandating near-universal insurance coverage. Other doctors are not immune. All told, 10 of 18 specialties also have shortages and all of the state’s community hospitals say they are having a hard time filing vacancies. “The findings from this latest analysis clearly show how fragile access to care for patients is across the entire Commonwealth,” society president Dr. Alice Coombs said in a statement released with the report.

No problem. They will just import doctors from third world countries to make up the shortages. Since all cultures are equal anyway, a medical degree from Mogadishu Community College should be just as good as one from John Hopkins University. < / do I really need a sarcasm tag? >

Why work like a dog and study for 16 years after high school , when you can make over $300,000.00 as a toll booth operator in New Jersey

There is a lot of good, fresh material for campaign ads telling voters to “vote the bums out”. I hope the ads are being made.

Meanwhile, also here in Massachusetts, hospitals are running dangerously short-staffed in critical departments and are laying off people and closing floors.

My wife and I both work in health care here in MA - it’s an unimaginable disaster. I say this with the utmost confidence: people are going to start DYING because of what the government is doing to health care.

Here too. We are anxiously awaiting yet another layoff at our local hospital. Hubby works there, and has for over 30 years. Another 70 are facing layoff in the coming months. Romneycare literally destroyed medical care in MA.
