NPR Ends Analyst’s Contract After Comments on Muslims (Juan Williams)
New York Times ^ | October 20, 2010

NPR has terminated its contract with Juan Williams, one of its senior news analysts, after he made comments about Muslims on the Fox News Channel. NPR said in a statement that it gave Mr. Williams notice of his termination on Wednesday night. The move came after Mr. Williams, who is also a Fox News political analyst, appeared on the “The O’Reilly Factor” on Monday. On the show, the host, Bill O’Reilly, asked him to respond to the notion that the United States was facing a “Muslim dilemma.” Mr. O’Reilly said, “The cold truth is that in the world today jihad, aided and abetted by some Muslim nations, is the biggest threat on the planet.”

Mr. Williams said he concurred with Mr. O’Reilly.

He continued: “I mean, look, Bill, I’m not a bigot. You know the kind of books I’ve written about the civil rights movement in this country. But when I get on the plane, I got to tell you, if I see people who are in Muslim garb and I think, you know, they are identifying themselves first and foremost as Muslims, I get worried. I get nervous.”

Mr. Williams also made reference to the Pakistani immigrant who pleaded guilty this month to trying to plant a car bomb in Times Square. “He said the war with Muslims, America’s war is just beginning, first drop of blood. I don’t think there’s any way to get away from these facts,” Mr. Williams said.

NPR said in its statement that the remarks “were inconsistent with our editorial standards and practices, and undermined his credibility as a news analyst with NPR.”

The public radio organization said it thanked him for many years of service. Mr. Williams did not immediately respond on Wednesday night to an e-mail seeking comment...

Gwen Ifill stupidly and incorrectly mocked Sarah Palin's "1773" comment on Ifill's Twitter feed. Ifill came off as a know-nothing with zero sense of why "1773" would be an important year at a Tea Party gathering.

Ifill should have been fired for ignorance, considering she actually moderated a debate during the 2008 elections.

Couldn’t happen to a nicer guy but I don’t see what the problem is with what he said.

So he lost his government job.....

When the GOP takes over the House in January and passes a new federal budget for the next fiscal year, I would love nothing more than to see them de-fund NPR altogether. Our tax dollars have absolutely no business funding their left-wing propoganda.

Interesting. Jesse Jackson, Sr. made a similar comment some years ago about his concern being raised if he’s followed by a young black male. No reverberations for that.

I feel the same way. Lately, it seemed like Juan was grasping at his last liberal straw, yet he had a death grip on it.

His reward? Being fired for telling his own personal truth.

Why are liberals so infatuated with Muslims,

Someone please explain this to me?

Who hated Bush as much as leftists? Radical Muslims.

For historical context - look at how the far left romanticized the Viet Cong during that conflict. That is my explanation for whatever it is worth.

I doubt that many NPR people aren’t a little nervous when they see Muslims on their flights.

Minor point, but I didn't think African Americans could be racist...

That's because racism is completely tied to power. It is impossible to for blacks to be racist because they lack any po... Obama and Holder

wait a minute......I'll have to get back to you on that definition.

“Juan is right... I think we may have a new convert to conservatism.”

*************************************************************

I’ve actually always liked and respected Juan Williams, even though I often disagree with him. However, he’s always struck me as thoughtful and open-minded and I could totally see him making the conversion to conservatism someday, a la Bernard Goldberg.

Nope, that would be Media Matters, they monitor all Fox programming and then notify the big dude. So far Media Matters has written about Beck 50,000 times since he went to Fox.

Not close it down, but defund it of public money, Soros wants it, let everyone know he owns it same as Murdock owns Fox.

The “Reverend” Jackson did not work for Fox News.

The GOP should defund NPR (along with ACORN and a whole list of other entities) immediately. The government has no business funding radio stations or community activists.

“He must be doing something right! Go, Juan.”

Yes, I quite agree. He’s a good guy, pretty fair and open to reason (for someone from NPR:-) and always cracks me up on the FNS panel when he debates with Kristol and Hume. I actually feel for him when watching his ears get boxed back (so to speak) by those two intellects and the looks on their faces when he says something misguided is simply priceless.

Maybe he’ll see the light after such mistreatment and hypocrisy by NPR. He could be a nice addition to the fair and balanced mix on FNC.

He's 100% right about that.
