Democrat John Mellencamp impressed with Sarah Palin

The rocker John Mellencamp is a longtime Democrat who refused to allow his songs to be used by Republican Sen. John McCain on the 2008 presidential campaign.

But when it comes to McCain's 2008 running mate, Sarah Palin, Mellencamp may be changing his tune.

Mellencamp told the Associated Press on Friday that he admires the former Alaska governor, and that people get the wrong idea about Palin, "just because she says things and winks."

To achieve what Palin has accomplished thus far requires intelligence, and Mellencamp said Palin "knows exactly what's she doing."

"She wouldn't be where she is today if she didn't."

Although Palin and Mellencamp are on opposite sides of the political spectrum, the singer said "she's pushing the right buttons" for her supporters, and "you can't be stupid and do that."

JCM once said, or was quoted as saying, the freedom of speech was not an individual right but a collective right.

I guess he might have been kidding but he is a lefty so you never know.

Theory predicts this, but it’s still amazing to watch.

I’ve met the guy a few times. I never did see his leanings forthcoming as he is a good old country boy from the heartland who sings beautiful songs about this land and it’s people. I was always confused when he became so political and was outspoken in his support for the left. That said I believe he sees the true love of country in Palin and he also has a family and there is so some awakening possibly going on. Ain’t that America, land of the free......!

"The left is starting to wake up to what they are facing."

Every "Jack and Diane" liberal living in their "Pink Houses" can see now that politics is "Serious Business" and Sarah is one of the special few "Rockin' In The USA".

Thanks for the interesting comment. Perhaps we are seeing the resegregation on the left of those who love this country and were misled or confused, and those who actually hate America.

I was just wondering about the mechanism of collective speech. Would be very weird.

Scarecrow on a wooden cross Blackbird in the barn
Four hundred empty acres that used to be my farm
I grew up like my daddy did my grandpa cleared this land
When I was five I walked the fence while grandpa held my hand

CHORUS:
Rain on the scarecrow Blood on the plow
This land fed a nation This land made me proud
And Son I’m just sorry there’s no legacy for you now
Rain on the scarecrow Blood on the plow
Rain on the scarecrow Blood on the plow

The crops we grew last summer weren’t enough to pay the loans
Couldn’t buy the seed to plant this spring and the Farmers Bank foreclosed
Called my old friend Schepman up to auction off the land
He said John it’s just my job and I hope you understand
Hey calling it your job ol’ hoss sure don’t make it right
But if you want me to I’ll say a prayer for your soul tonight
And grandma’s on the front porch swing with a Bible in her hand
Sometimes I hear her singing “Take me to the Promised Land”
When you take away a man’s dignity he can’t work his fields and cows

There’ll be blood on the scarecrow Blood on the plow
Blood on the scarecrow Blood on the plow

Well there’s ninety-seven crosses planted in the courthouse yard
Ninety-seven families who lost ninety-seven farms
I think about my grandpa and my neighbors and my name
And some nights I feel like dyin’ Like that scarecrow in the rain

John Mellen Cougar-Camp, or Jonathan Mellencougar, or Jon Camp-Mellon, or ‘The Cougster’, or whatever he wants us to call him now should go back to suckin’ on a chili dog behind the Tastee-Freez.

Between about 1975 and 1985, this country went through quite an economic transformation. Blue collar work dried up in many areas, factories closed, farms were foreclosed.

A lot of people like Springsteen, Mellencamp, and Willie Nelson used Music to speak out and identify the tragedy. Others, like Sam Shepherd, Jessica Lange and more used film to make a statement about the passing away of a way of life.

I keep waiting for Artists of today to show us the consequences of the Obama collpase. I'm also waiting for any angry Punk rock revolution in which groups like The Clash rise up and demand change -- or else.

But so far, all I really see is a smarmy Jon Stewart making cheap jokes. Is that the best we can go?
