"Marine 1" is the designation for any rotor aircraft that is currently carrying the President.

Marine One is the designation for any Marine Corps rotary winged aircraft that is carrying the President.

It is possible that he used one that was based locally.

Incorrect. All of HMX-1s aircraft are based at MCAF Quantico.

It is also possible that it was transported cross-country in a large fixed-wing aircraft.

C-5 or C-17 is the usual mode of transport.

Small correction: Marine One is the designation for any Marine Corps aircraft that is carrying the President. Rotary wing or fixed wing.

So if the President hops a ride aboard a USMC F/A-18D or EA-6B ... or more likely (but still pretty unlikely) one of their Cessna Citation bizjet (see pic below), that aircraft bears the "Marine One" designation.
