Tom Tancredo this afternoon criticized his opponent in the gubernatorial race, Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper, as an out-of-touch elitist after video surfaced of Hickenlooper talking of "backwards thinking" in rural areas of the Interior West.
In the video, Hickenlooper is responding to an question from transgender journalist Eden Lane regarding why the Matthew Shepard Foundation would establish its headquarters in Denver.
"I think a couple of things, I mean, you know, the tragic death of Matthew Shepard occurred in Wyoming," Hickenlooper says in the video taken in late 2009. "Colorado and Wyoming are very similar. We have some of the same, you know backwards thinking
in the kind of rural Western areas you see in, you know, Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, New Mexico."
The National Review Online posted the video on its website today, and it soon became a talking point in Colorado's race for governor.
Tancredo, a former GOP Congressman running for governor as an American Constitution Party candidate, issued a press release saying that Hickenlooper had smeared all of rural Colorado.
Shepard was a gay Wyoming college student who was murdered in 1998. His death galvanized gay rights advocates to push for passage of federal legislation that made sure hate crimes can also include violence motivated by sexual orientation.
"To suggest that people in rural Colorado are 'backwards' because they don't share your left-wing values reinforces once again just how out of touch you are," Tancredo said. "Mr. Mayor, you owe the people of rural Colorado an apology."
George Merritt, the spokesman for the Hickenlooper campaign, said: "John was making the point that the kind of intolerance that led to Matthew Shepard's murder is not unique to a single community in Wyoming."
Merritt added: "It's something that can happen in any community. He wishes he had articulated that point
Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper. (Karl Gehring, Denver Post file)better to make it clear that any community is susceptible to hatred, but he continues to feel strongly that the intolerance that killed Shepard is backwards and not acceptable."
Exactly, it was a drug deal gone bad. He was buying drugs from them, and they killed him for his money.
Tancredo is one of those lucky politicians this year. His opponents aren’t just shooting themselves in the foot, they’re shooting themselves in the head.
Scouts Out! Cavalry Ho!
So, I guess he wasn't just a stupid little faggot, but he was a stupid little druggie faggot.
Scouts Out! Cavalry Ho!
I wonder why no one ever remembers poor little Jesse Dirkhising, 13 y.o. little boy raped and killed by two openly gay men in Arkansas around the same time. I feel terrible for Matthew Shepard, but equally so for Jesse. Where is his foundation?
Chickenpooper is an east coast liberal having come from Pennsylvania. He is the one that hired the illegal alien that later shot two cops, killing one, and then said he would rehire that illegal alien.
