Brown says he'll pull attack ads if Whitman does; Whitman refuses

LONG BEACH -- At a remarkable forum attended by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and his two potential successors, Democrat Jerry Brown said today that he would stop running negative TV ads if opponent Meg Whitman does the same.

"No problem,'' Brown said. "I will take down any advertising remotely construed as a personal attack."

No deal, said an obviously flustered Whitman, who was down 13 points in the latest Los Angeles Times/USC poll.

To the boos of the audience at the annual Women's Conference sponsored by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and wife Maria Shriver, Whitman said that "people need to understand'' Brown's failed record as governor and mayor of Oakland.

Meg should run an ad in which she says that she didn't make any deals with or promises to that LA police union that led to the "whore" comments. The theme of this campaign must be that she'll be tougher on the public employee unions than Brown and that whole "whore" episode cut against that theme.

Time is running out.

Ah, another "electable" moderate in action. Good thing Californians nominated her and not outspoken conservatives running in "blue states" like Pat Toomey in Penn., Paul LePage in Maine, and Bill Brady in Illinois. You know... the "unelectable" types who currently lead their Dem opponents by comfortable margins.

The conservative voting base needed a true conservative GOP candidate to vote for, and this is, also, part of the problem. No more leftist politicians includes no more RINOS.

Meg is a fool. She was set up by Maria Schriver (and her dum-dum husband). She should have avoided that meeting like the plague.

Spoken like someone from Massachusetts. You have a very naive view of the electorate in CA.

That’s my reaction, too. Obviously an ultra-liberal audience, ready to boo her at the first opportunity. Once again Arnie does his wife’s bidding. But I don’t know why Whitman fell for it.

Hilarious that these 3rd worlders will elect Jerry Brown...they obviously don’t give a darn about their state.

Please no more whining about how bad things are in CA...and no bailout!

Wrong, I'm from MA and a “true conservative GOP candidate to vote for”....would never and cannot ever happen here.
That is why we are lucky to have candidates like Bill weld, Paul cellucci, Mitt Romney, Scott Brown, etc...
RINO is the best we could ever hope for around here.

That being the case i would still crawl over broken glass to vote for Charles Baker for governor next tuesday.
Pretty pathetic i know....

Given the choice of only one winning I would much rather have Fiorina beat boxer and Whitman lose. TWO REASONS - 1. Getting rid of Boxer helps me in Arizona and all of the rest of America. 2. California is a train wreck. There is nothing that a GOP governor can do to stop your Democrat/Union controlled assembly. Better to let Moonbeam drive that train into the ashes than give the rats someone to blame.

Same here. Hopefully WHitman spent a bunch of those millions on GOTV which will help Carly. But we always need to remind ourselves that California, like Ct never fails to dash our hopes.

My point, in living in these strong blue states, one needs to be realistic. Sounds like you are as well.

I do not subscribe to the theory that one is selling out to get a RINO in office. Sometimes, that is all that can be accomplished at that point in time.

Yup, I wish we were as lucky as NJ with a Chris Christie on the ballot but not this time.
Charlie Baker is a successful businessman and that's all that really matters now, for now, around here.

....And many freepers consider Christie a RINO and for good reason.
I still wish he was running for Gov of MA.

... and I am glad Meg Whitman is running. She is our best choice right now.

I hope it rains next Tuesday. :)
