MEMPHIS, TN - Tennessee’s 9th congressional district is considered one of the strongest Democratic safe haven’s in the country. This year incumbent Steve Cohen, is challenged by Republican Charlotte Bergmann—of whom, according to several reports—he has been dismissive.
But, Bergmann is ready for a fight, and believes in her campaign slogan: “Charlotte Bergmann Can Win”. Despite Cohen’s statements that he doesn’t plan to do much to motivate democratic voters—and won’t debate Bergmann—she says, “Bring it on.”
“My opponent dismisses me at his peril”, Bergmann told Eyewitness News, “but then he has had interactions with me in the past and he knows that all I want to do is talk to him about his voting record, the record that is impacting the people of this community adversely.”
Despite a huge disparity in campaign dollars, Bergmann feels she can get all the Republican votes, some of the Democrats, some Tea Party support—and be victorious, while Cohen has said he hasn’t given much thought to campaigning.
“He doesn’t—according to him—think I am a viable candidate”, said Bergmann, “I’m the Republican nominee of this community. As a result of that I deserve the respect that a nominee should have. He has dismissed me, but I think he’ll come around. I think the people of this community will make it known that they’re not happy with his dismissive attitude.”
She may be right. Here’s a sampling from TOPIX.COM: “Cohen is awfully arrogant to refuse to debate Ms. Bergmann.”
What about that debate? Any negotiating going on?
“Not on my part”, Bergmann told Eyewitness News, “if he wants to debate me, I’m ready. Where is he? He needs to be willing to stand up and support the votes that he has made.”
Hey, it’s politics—so there’s no lack of rhetoric. But, it really hasn’t bothered Bergmann, who said, “To be quite frank with you, every time he opens his mouth and dismisses me, it energizes the people of this community, and I’m getting more and more support. So, keep it coming, keep it coming.”
Congressman Cohen was unavailable for comment.

Cohen is registered member of the Democrat Socialist Caucus.
And he’s one of 11 DSA members on the Judiciary Committee.
No shock then that he has the full endorsement of Obama...voted for the healthcare bill twice. I give this black woman a lot of credit...in a heavy black district we have a white jewish yet anti-Israel socialist/commie who is leading a black conservative church going honest woman.

Overall the state is firmly in the red camp.

RCP has TN 4 as a tossup, TN 6 as likely R, and TN 8 as leaning R. It could be 6-3 or even 7-2 R in the next Congress.

PS, my brother-in-law moved up from state assemblman to the state senate in NV-S Dist. 12. His Republican assembly replacement retained his district. Unfortunately, both houses of the NV state legislature remain socialist. The governor, fortunately is a conservative.

I have serious reservations about the future of Nevada and California, states already in financial trouble — I’m afraid they will be looking to the rest of us for a bailout (esp. CA with a 21 billion deficit).
Unfortunately we also have a real registered Socialist in the (Memphis) TN 9th congressional district in Steve Cohen, and the black female lawyer we put up against him didn’t make much headway. This time.
