With even the safest Dem seats under threat, tempers are beginning to unravel: Some Dems are distancing themselves from Obama, whom they see as a vote loser, but the RI Dem candidate for governor went even further: expressing exasperation that the president had failed to endorse him. Obama backed Independent candidate Lincoln Chafee, a former Repub who backed Obama for president. Chafee's exploiting Democratic discord, featuring Obama in an ad. Obama visited RI mainly to raise funds for Dems. Caprio said Obama had ignored the state, and: "Now he's coming to RI and treating us like an ATM machine." RI is normally one of the safest Democratic states in the country.
In a final "battleground poll," Politico shows Repubs with a 14% lead among independents....... the ones who gave Dems 2006 congressional wins and propelled Obama into the White House in 2008.
