Bill Clinton pushed Meek to quit Florida race
Politico ^ | 10/28/2010 | Ben Smith

Bill Clinton sought to persuade Rep. Kendrick Meek to drop out of the race for Senate during a trip to Florida last week — and nearly succeeded.

Meek agreed — twice — to drop out and endorse Gov. Charlie Crist’s independent bid in a last-ditch effort to stop Marco Rubio, the Republican nominee who stands on the cusp of national stardom.

Meek, a staunch Clinton ally from Miami, has failed to broaden his appeal around the state and is mired in third place in most public polls, with a survey today showing him with just 15 percent of the vote. His withdrawal, polls suggest, would throw core Democratic voters to the moderate governor, rocking a complicated three-way contest and likely throwing the election to Crist.

This still poses some danger to Rubio.
If people think a vote for Meeks is wasted, they may go to Crist.

Anybody remember the major announcement from Crist for Oct 2/ - turned out to be RFK jr. Because this deal fell apart.

Alternatively, it might make a lot of the RAT faithful furious.

If cynicism prevails, it will hurt Alex Sink. That would be the BEST consequence.

Also Rubio has been polling around 50%. I don’t see even if this intentional leak from the Democrat’s cutting enough support out to help Crist at this stage. The 2000 drunk driving charge and announcing polls had closed when they hadn’t in Florida didn’t steal 7%-10%. At best 5% maximum of the vote in which people mostly sat at home.

If anyone quits it should be Crist. He cannot win, period.

This is gonna be a massive backfire and hand votes by the bucket to Rubio. Oh and I wouldnt put it past Bill to do this deliberately as a backslap at Obama, Obama probably was gonna set Bill up to take the fall, Bambi cant be seen to chuck a black guy under the bus, he would dump it on Clinton in a moment, hence the revelation, Bill got wind what he was up to.

This is how bad the Democrats want to beat Rubio. Be prepared for shenanigans on Tuesday. They do not want Rubio to win this seat.

Meeks campaign mgr now saying no way Meeks will drop out, so maybe the treachery will redound in his favor - but I doubt it.

This Clinton intervention has very little to do w one Senate seat. What it is about: preventing Marco Rubio from becoming President of the United States at some point in the future.

The RATS are that terrified of Rubio; and rightly so.

I wonder if its a hit job on Obama, coming right on the heels of the RI Caprio flap, this shows yet again, Obama will not back Democrats only whats on his agenda.

Caprio yesterday, Meeks today, jeez Dems you really have Obama watching your back don’t ya.

Wake up, you are pawns in his game, Clinton leaked this deliberately, he wants Obama ruined on Tuesday.

Clinton may have leaked this because he wants Obama to lose the FL governorship; Sink would help Obama’s chance of carrying FL.

The OH and FL gubernatorial races matter more to Obama than any other elections on Tuesday.

I am still not sure of all the motivations - except Crist. I believe Crist leaked the story.

Darryl Issa is going to have a field day with this.

Question from Mr. Issa:

Mr. Meek, what were you promised?

I think this was more of a favor called in by Schumer of other dem leadership in the Senate. With Crist being a party to the deal.

Call Clinton and have him convince Meek to drop out, and Crist will agree to caucus with the dems when he gets in the Senate, giving them what will be a badly needed additional seat. This seems to be a panic move for the dems. They must see some stuff going on late out there that has them scared to death.

Clinton served his two terms, his involvement with this administration seems unethical.

I agree entirely w your analysis. However, I doubt Schumer wanted the story out once the deal fell through. This is Crist’s Hail Mary - a true scumbag.

The big questions: why would Clinton confirm the story and how does this impact the gubernatorial race?
