Early voting ends, turnout low among minorities in Cook County suburbs [Illinois]
Medill Reports ^ | 10/28/10 | Alexander Wilson

Turnout in polling places in suburban Cook County show that residents in several areas with large minority populations did not vote early.

Numbers released Thursday by the Cook County clerk showed that places like Park Forest and Cicero had lackluster turnout at early voting locations. Park Forest has a minority population of 61 percent, with an African American population of 55 percent. The total population of the suburb is more than 22,000, but as of Wednesday only 747 people had voted.

Cicero has over 26,000 registered voters with 77 percent Hispanic, but as of Wednesday only 921 people had shown up at either of two early voting locations.

By contrast, affluent and white residents turned out for early voting in greater numbers. Orland Park, which has a population that is 87 percent white, was the largest early voting site. More than 5,000 residents voted early there this year.

The trend fits conventional wisdom for the election year, with excitement for the election season coming from older, white voters—a demographic that tends to be conservative.

A total of 72,244 suburban residents voted early this year, according to the Cook County clerk.

Democratic candidates are relying on minority voters this election season to fend off conservative opposition. African-Americans voted at 95 percent for Democrats in 2008 and Hispanics have voted at 2-1 for Democrats.

Several of the voters at the board of elections office on 69 W. Washington St. Thursday were from the suburbs. One voter was an African-American from south suburban Calumet City. She said that she voted straight Democratic.

“I believe in what President Obama’s doing,” the woman, Sylvia Davis said. “I believe in his agenda and I believe if we don’t vote then we’re just turning back the hands of time.”

But the overall low early voter turnout among minorities could signal that Democratic candidates might be in trouble. One political expert, however, said a number of factors could be at play.

David Yepsen, the director of the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute, said Thursday “this is something new in Illinois politics so it’s a little difficult to read tea leaves.” The higher turnout among affluent voters could mean those residents have more free time to go to the polls early, he said.

But he also said that Democrats have had a difficult time getting its base as excited this year as they were in 2008.

Yepsen also pointed out that in 2006 Democrats won big in Illinois, a year in which several minority areas did not have early voting polling locations.

Courtney Greve, a spokeswoman for Cook County Clerk David Orr, said that suburbanites were permitted to use any polling location in the suburbs or the board of elections office downtown in Chicago, but polls have shown most people voted close to home.

Votes will magically appear where they are needed to tip the balance in close elections.

I’m sure the Democrats have armies of lawyers lined up for election day and days after. They will see where they lost by narrow margins on election day, review recount and lawsuit procedures, and go to work.

Election Day could be just the beginning. Especially if there are numerous House races too close to call, and if Republicans don’t have a majority in the House clinched on election night without knowing the outcome of these close races. We could see two dozen or more recounts around the country at once. All could devolve into circuses, as we saw in Florida in 2000 and in the Al Franken recount in 2008.

Caller to Rush’s show today said that Cook County didn’t mail out the military ballots!!. The Lefties, however, hand-delivered 2,600 ballots to prisoners who are not allowed to vote per their State Constitution.

2012 ticket 90% of the blacks would go nuts and vote GOP out of spite or stay home.

Not a single black that didn’t vote in ‘04 will vote in ‘12 if Zero isn’t on the ticket.

Pro: Clinton’s the only Democrat who can win in 2012

Obama didn’t pay any mortgages, or come up with free gas for his worshippers.

“I believe in his agenda and I believe if we don’t vote then we’re just turning back the hands of time.”

Fortunately this dingbat isn't typical. She's parroting exactly the "turning back the clock" focus group soundbite that the man-child has been putting out every chance he gets. The implication is that "turning back the clock" means turning back the clock to slavery and Jim Crow, and it's sickening that the media lets man-child get away with this disgraceful slur.

Fortunately it appears from this story that most minority voters are voting with their feet, or rather not voting. The implied statement in staying away from the polls is that we don't believe that letting the Republicans run the country means the return of slavery, and this is a welcome realization.

I think that Clinton is damaged goods too. Obama got the nomination in parts as a repudiation of the Clintons by the Democrat base. This country does not want business as usual, not even the libs.

I agree that without Obama on the ticket the black vote will evaporate in rage. And he won’t go quietly.

That’s all very interesting but what I’d like to know is what’s the turnout rate among the cemeteries - probably up around 9,000% or whatever is needed.

“The next enemy of the left: old white folks.”

Next? Who do you think the ObamaCare money was taken from? I thought that was publicized when they were asked how they’d pay for it (cuts in Medicare).

The left will euthanize/neglect the elderly to free the next generation (and Social Security, Medicare) from the cost of their care (and re-distribute it to the perpetually government-dependent); when the Kenyan Pirate talked about the costs of caring for a person in the last few months of their life (which is what started the whole “death panel” row), this is exactly what he was talking about.

I’d hope there are enough retirees still voting to make them eat their words; they are in the crosshairs of the Democrats (after a comment like that, who really wants old people to die?).

Interesting choice of words.

Why should they? Their votes have already been arranged by the “Democrats”, whether they approve or not.

Name one thing on O's agenda, Sylvia, much less one thing you agree with. You say you agree with it, but I bet you can't tell anyone what it is.

Dream on, Yepsen. The white middle class Cook County voter is mad as hell and not going to take in anymore....

“There is no free stuff for voting early. You get PAID for voting on election day”

Exactly! Guaranteed that the union contracts all have this paid time in their contracts. At least it was in every SEIU contract I came in contact with.

I'm starting to get a tingle up my leg. I'm thinking this is the beginning of a devastating trend for the Dems this election cycle.

And as far as old white folks, they became the enemy as soon as Obama took office. ObamaCare is the mechanism that would reduce elderly longevity.
