oing into the 2010 election cycle, conventional political wisdom held that U.S. Rep. Steve Cohen, the incumbent 9th Congressional District representative from Memphis, would face his toughest test in the Democratic primary before cruising to victory in November.
After all, it was former Memphis mayor Willie Herenton challenging Cohen in the primary, and the general election would likely pit him against a Republican candidate embracing tea-party philosophy in a district where 77 percent of the voters went for President Barack Obama in 2008.
But that general-election opponent, a rare African-American Republican candidate named Charlotte Bergmann, appears to be galvanizing more anti-Cohen support than Herenton could muster (he got just 21 percent of the vote) and is heading a campaign that in many ways is more aggressively taking on Cohen.
Indeed, says Cohen, the Bergmann commercial in which he's ridiculed with the old turn-and-cough male physical examination proves to him that Bergmann's campaign is not serious — more interested in getting attention than engaging in the issues most important to the large majority of 9th District voters.
Cohen claims Bergmann is controlled by "far-right elements," with a campaign director, Howie Morgan, from Oxford, Miss., and that his own best campaign tactic continues to be working to generate results for the 9th District -- and his Congressional office sends a barrage of e-mails out every week detailing it.

“I guess the tea party is controlling the message, and as much as anything they are using her to get out their philosophy more than they are winning... ,” Cohen said.
“The tea party message is not one that will resonate with a majority of voters, and even contrary to establishment Republicans and certainly to Democrats and Independents.”
Bergmann’s response: “I’m in this because I care about the people in my community and I care about the survival of this community. You drive down the street, certain areas of this community, people are starving ... people can’t go out and purchase the things they used to. Congressman Cohen has not addressed those concerns. Congressman Cohen voted to support the legislation that has been promoted by this liberal Congress, and that has not helped this community.”

Steve Cohen, who greeted voters at a Democratic event several blocks away in Midtown, said that he had in fact been a part of historic bills to give people tax breaks, not tax hikes.
“We voted on the largest tax breaks in United States history in the 111th Congress. In fact, the stimulus bill was 40 percent tax breaks. There have been more tax breaks for 95 percent of the citizens of the middle class,” Cohen said.
Cohen is not knocking on doors this weekend, but is still passing out his signature buttons that he said he likes to collect.
He said that it is in fact a difficult year for some of his Democratic colleagues, but that he is not nervous himself. He remains unfazed by some demands to remove people who seem to be Washington insiders.
“We know how Washington works; we’re effective at making it work. That’s been my life. Some people say we don’t need anymore career politicians, but Thomas Jefferson was a career politician and so was George Washington,” Cohen said.
I chose to wait until Tuesday to vote for her so I can see the turnout at the normal time at the polls. Mine is one of the precints she needs to do well in, but oddly enough by having the turn out lower here.
His district wants free stuff. They don’t give a crap who gives it to them. They don’t want to hear about being self reliant. They, in fact, seem to want a master.
We need at least 7 African American republicans to win this Nov to put the lie on the Congressional Black Caucus. Tim Scott in SC is a shoo in, Alan West in Fla has a very good chance. Ryan Frazier in CO, this Charlotte Bergmann and Bill Marcy in MS have decent chances of getting elected. I believe that Pastor Broden in TX 30 and Star Parker in Cali are longshots that could win. Michael Faulkner in Charlie Rangels district and the man with the famous name running in Illinois have very little chance.
Have I missed any good chances?
I’m part of the district. I work rather hard for my “stuff.”
It would be fantastic if they all won, but if just three are elected, I'll be very happy. Even just three will be very big news, and will signal a major paradigm shift in the country.
Expect all of the black Republicans to get a cold shoulder from the CBC, who are, of course, all Commies.
