Barack Obama's trip to India next month will be the biggest by any US President - with a staggering 40 aircraft and six armoured cars.
Details of the elaborate arrangements for the tree-day presidential visit on November 6 were leaked to Indian newspaper earlier this week.

The left ranted about how Bush was making us look bad to the world.
Bush was a humble but confident American for the world to see our leadership role in the world.
In contrast, Obama is making us look like the arrogant and audacious boobs the Euro-press says about all Americans abroad.

As a veteran of several presidential visits overseas, I can tell you that while 40 planes probably sets a new high (or low) in excess, it’s certainly in the same ballpark as other visits by previous presidents, including both Bushes and Clinton. The public would be shocked and infuriated if it was shown a detailed breakdown of cost, personnel, equipment, and transportation assets dedicated to a presidential visit overseas. For example, the White House Communications Agency (WHCA, pronounced “Wah-kah”) typically takes over an entire floor of the designated presidential hotel. When President Clinton visited Tokyo in April 2000 to attend the funeral of Prime Minister Obuchi, he was on the ground for less than 12 hours — but some 40 WHCA personnel arrived ahead of him and set up a one-floor communications command post at the hotel. Is this really necessary?
Another example: among the “essential” White House personnel who typically accompany the President (again, any president, not just Obama) is the presidential chef — even when the President won’t be eating any food other than hotel or reception food; the idea is to have the chef around to cook whatever the president wants anytime he wants it.
Locally-leased vehicles are never used for the presidential party and the secret service. They are all flown in in USAF transports. Think of the cost of that line item alone.
Also, whenever the President comes, two Marine One helicopters are flown in and assembled and made ready — even when the President isn’t scheduled to use Marine One on the visit. They’re there to provide emergency transportation.
I could go on, but the point I’m making is: while all of these things are good to have (each of them can be justified on a “what if x happened — then you’d want to have him/it available” basis), at what point will the American people demand that a cost-benefit calculation enter the picture on presidential visits? Because right now, it’s not part of the picture at all.
When things become too complex, they collapse.
I’m afraid we are nearing that point.
