MOBILE, Ala. -- Mobile police say a man who was burglarizing a home off Dauphin Island Parkway was shot and killed Thursday night.
A resident of the home on the 1300 block of Driftwood Drive North shot and killed 19-year-old Marcus Steele as he was trying to enter the home, said Mobile Police Officer Chris Levy.
Police arrived to the scene around 9:48 p.m. and found Steele lying in a driveway. Steel was taken to the University of South Alabama Medical Center, and he died later from his injuries.
Burglary is a crime that occurs when someone either breaks into a home or is otherwise there unlawfully to commit another crime.
Levy would not say what crime police thought Steele was there to commit. But he said it was not a "random act."
"Theres some kind of history," Levy said. "I cant get into that. All I can say is it wasnt random. He went to that house for a purpose."
At this point, no charges are being filed against the shooter, whom police would not identify.
"Were going to continue the investigation. If we determine that there should be charges, then there will be," Levy said. "Right now, we know Marcus Steele was committing a burglary and during his committing of that, he got shot. Thats what we believed to have happened right now."
Levy said an autopsy is being done to determine how many shots were fired. He said it appears that Steele was shot around his chin.
You may wish to rethink that statement after Googling the name of the perp.

LOL!
A Gay Porn star? That’s what Google seems to think...
“
Breaking into someones house is very dangerous.
“
At least in most locales south of The Mason-Dixon Line.
Especially Texas.
Heck, even Missouri now has the Castle Doctrine.
Two thugs broke into an apartment here in relatively-liberal
Columbia, MO soon after the Castle Doctrine was enacted.
The guy living in the apartment sent both thugs to their eternal reward.
No charges filed, no grand jury.
Works for me...and apparently even some of the liberal elements in
this town.
I guess they also don’t like people bursting into their domiciles
in the middle of the night.
“
In Massachusetts if you break into a house, in say uber liberal Brookline,
“
Michael Dukakis’ town IIRC.
When he’s not at UCLA.
(I think he’s some sort of adjunct professor/lecturer; at least at
sometime five or six years ago.)
That shooting is about 2 blocks from the house that I just moved out of when I moved to Texas. I had to read the article to see if anyone that I knew was the shooter. Drugs, burglary, robbery, and crimes of all sorts are common there, many are not even reported. Since we moved in Aug, several other long time residents have placed their houses up for sale and are getting out. It is only going to get worse there.
I grew up off DIP on the Bay in Mobile. My father owned a C-store there for a long time. The burglar went on the wrong side of DIP to commit his crime. Driftwood Dr is home to a many G_D fearing, hard working, gun totin’ folks.
DIP used to be a great neighborhood. Not any more. There are still many decent people living there, but they are outnumbered nowadays.
My folks moved from Bay Front Rd down the beach to Hollinger’s Island. Once you cross that Dog River bridge, things are better. DIP east between BC Rain and the bridge is “The Hood”. Even down on the Bay now it’s not as safe as it used to be. Either way, you gotta go through the Hood to get home.
Just ... damn.
A 19 year old young man should be just starting out life, full of hope and promise and taking on the responsibilities of adulthood.
This guy chose, instead, to follow a life of crime.
Now he's dead, and it's his own damn fault.
What might he have become, what good might he have done, had he chosen wisely?
We'll never know.
At least he won't burgle any more houses.
The one thing that we miss about DIP is having Smokey Dembo’s BBQ ribs. The best ribs anywhere.
45 minutes from me.
Mmmmm, Smokey Dem’s.
“What might he have become, what good might he have done, had he chosen wisely?”
I’m sure his mom would call him a good boy who was getting his life together and aspiring to be a rapper before racism put him down.
Another example of 30 cents worth of ammo saving taxpayers hundreds of thousands of dollars.
I suspect his mom had some significant involvement in what was probably a long string of unwise choices on his part. I'd venture to guess that there was a long string of unwise choices on her part, as well. His death didn't happen in a cultural vacuum, and it had nothing whatever to do with "racism putting him down".
"He chose .... poorly".
I guess it's safe to say that photo of Mr. Steele during healthier days was not taken at the DMV.
