SAN LEANDRO -- Javier Gonzalez believes he would have a job today were it not for illegal immigration.

"I think that illegal immigrants do take jobs away from native workers, especially out here in the Bay Area," said the 43-year-old son of Mexican immigrants. "I'm unemployed, but I shouldn't have to be. I'm from the area. I was born here and I can't get a job here." For the jobless, especially those who work in the trades, the thought of competing against an illegal work force of undocumented immigrants can be a sore point. Labor market economists have long differed about whether such fears are grounded in reality.

But a study released Friday by the Pew Hispanic Center adds fuel to the fire, finding that as the economy slowly recovers, foreign-born workers are taking up jobs faster than their native-born counterparts. Immigrants, both legal and illegal, have gained 656,000 jobs since June 2009, the month that federal economists consider to be the end of the Great Recession. Native-born workers lost 1.2 million jobs in the same period of economic recovery, according to the report.

You don’t say....I don’t know a single unionized construction worker who isn’t nearly foaming with rage about the illegal immigration situation.

This is why I don't understand why Hispanic rights groups and American-Hispanics so overwhelmingly support illegal immigration.

They are the ones that lose out more then anyone. Businesses are going to get to a point where its no longer worth the trouble to hire any Hispanic (Meg Whitman) due to the possible back lash. Illegals steal more from their American-Hispanic counter part then anyone else.

Blacks too support the open borders crowd and they are next in line to suffer the ramifications of the jobs lost to illegals.

Things will only get worse when the Dems force amnesty down our throats during the lame duck session. It's an untenable situation and the people the most likely to suffer are the ones supporting the politicians making things so bad for them. I just don't get it.

This racist is clearly anti-immigrant and hates Mexicans. La Raza should be protesting in front of his house. /s

In a word...tribalism.

It's always possible for someone, getting paid under the table, to undercut a laborer following the rules. If the current crop of illegal aliens are declared to be here legally, they'll promptly be replaced with another crop of illegals.

The illegal employers don't want the illegal aliens to be made legal. They just want to pay low labor costs, while their fellow citizens pick up the many other costs associated with their labor force.

"I think that illegal immigrants do take jobs away from native workers, especially out here in the Bay Area,"

Clearly this ignorant citizen has no idea what he is talking about. The vast majority, perhaps unanimity, of Ivy League economists would readily refute these complaints.

This article is the answer to the question: “why didn’t Obama work on amnesty during his first couple of years?”. The answer is that a huge part of his supporters (black population) do not want amnesty for illegals as they in general represent competition for jobs. In an cynical ploy to thread the needle, Obama does nothing for illigals the first couple of years except for he symbolic high profile stunt of suing Arizona, then he PROMISES them that he would do what they want him to do over the next couple of years, if they vote for his Democrat rubber stampers during the midterms.

Excellent point. Certainly, the elitist-owned Spanish language media and general media promote this idea. However, I suspect that conservatives with the courage to make the case for immigration law enforcement directly to Hispanic citizens would receive substantial support.

You’re absolutely right; the last people who would want an amnesty are those that hire the invaders. They’d have to deal with such trivialities as workers comp insurance, federal, state, and social security taxes, overtime, etc.

I think some Mexican-Americans are opposed to illegal immigration; Dems don’t win them by 9:1 margins the way they do with “other groups”...

latest data show 22.1 million immigrants holding jobs in the U.S. with an estimated 7 million being illegal aliens. By increasing the supply of labor between 1980 and 2000, immigration reduced the average annual earnings of native-born men by an estimated $1,700 or roughly 4 percent. Among natives without a high school education, who roughly correspond to the poorest tenth of the workforce, the estimated impact was even larger, reducing their wages by 7.4 percent. The reduction in earnings occurs regardless of whether the immigrants are legal or illegal, permanent or temporary. It is the presence of additional workers that reduces wages, not their legal status.

The Bureau of Labor statistics for August 2010 show a national unemployment rate of 9.6 percent, including 16.3 percent for blacks and 12 percent for Hispanics. 14.9 million Americans are unemployed. Despite the economic downturn, the U.S. continues to bring in 125,000 new, legal foreign workers a month. This includes new permanent residents (green cards) and long-term temporary visas and others who are authorized to take a job. This makes no sense.

I'm losing my Phoenix hospital job in 2 weeks after 7 years. They're outsourcing/offshoring the transcription department to India to save money. Their money crunch is in large part due to the sheer number of illegals that use the ER like an urgent care.

“This is why I don’t understand why Hispanic rights groups and American-Hispanics so overwhelmingly support illegal immigration.”

There is a huge difference in attitudes towards illegals between US citizen latinos and latinos in general.

US citizen latinos are not happy about illegal immigration. Most of them do not have any illegal family members. Basically, their attitudes are similar to other US citizens.

All latinos in the US (e.g. illegals) are total opposite. They want amnesty (and they also respond to polls).

Javier Gonzalez welcome to the club, many Memphians are saying the same thing. My neighbors who are black included, mad enough about it so that the entire family is voting GOP this year, where they normally vote dem. Mom works at the local children’s hospital, daughter lost her good paying job to an illegal, dad works his tail off too. Good hard working neighbors any one would be proud to live next to. So they know what obummercare is going to do to our health care and amnesty will do.

Today in California at an Enterprise Rent a Car franchise, I was

- Driven to the lot by an illegal who admitted he was from Guadalajara (he has to be illegal, there's no green cards for lot boys)

- Waited on by the Rental manager who spoke with a heavy accent, looked like he arrived yesterday

- Noticed that the other "managers" all had Mexican surnames, save the lone White Female, who of course they like having around.

But no White males, especially no Black males, and they probably have sent out the word for more of their buddies to head North, we gotta Yob for You.

This on the coastline of California, in what should be the nicest part of America.

They're doing a cost/benefit analysis. Just because they may not be calculating right, don't think they are being irrational.

Many think that bolstering their political bloc numbers will lead to more redistribution from the anti-white Democrats.

The thinking is this: I may lose x in wages/profits by bringing in more of my bloc as competition, but I gain x+1 in subsidies, government contracts, welfare, affirmative action, healthcare, sinecures, education money, etc. through political power by bringing in more of my bloc.

The end game is when the bloc getting bled is left with empty veins. It's getting close to that.
