Tsongas told to move away from Tenney polling station By Bill Kirk bkirk@eagletribune.com The Eagle Tribune Tue Nov 02, 2010, 03:31 PM EDT

METHUEN — Congresswoman Niki Tsongas, D-Lowell, got a little too close to one of the local polling places this morning and was asked by police to move, according to the Methuen city clerk.

Clerk Christine Touma-Conway said Tsongas, who is running for reelection against Republican Jon Golnik, went to the Tenney School to greet voters. While she was there, she was shaking hands and greeting voters inside the 150-buffer zone that is set by law to keep campaigners and candidates away from the immediate vicinity around polling places, Touma-Conway said.

"I don't know how close she was," Touma-Conway said.

A police officer assigned to the polling station told Tsongas she had to move back outside the 150-foot buffer, and she complied.

A Tsongas campaign spokesman confirmed Tsongas was asked to move and did so but said such incidents are not unusual.

Also this morning, Tsongas went to the Timony School to donate baked goods for a PTO fundraiser. She entered the building and handed the PTO people some items, and then left, Touma-Conway said.

But the clerk said it is legal for candidates to deliver food to bake sales or even to deliver refreshments to poll workers inside a polling place, as long as they don't talk to voters or do any kind of politicking.

This is the widow of Paul Tsongas. The radio stations here in Boston are bristling with reports of this behavior.

I guess rules are for The Little People.

First Michelle Obama, now this. And she did it at more than one place today.

Wave your arms, Niki, it’ll make it harder for ‘em to get the net over you.

“This is the widow of Paul Tsongas.”

rhetorical question. Why is it that conservative women achieve success on their own while Lib women depend on their Hubbies or their Daddies?

This is the widow of Paul Tsongas.

For a moment, I thought it was Paul Tsongas.

And I thought: the Democrats must really be "bringing out their dead" for this election.

First Michelle Obama, now this. And she did it at more than one place today.

She read the electioneering laws, noticed that they didn't mention her by name, and figured there was "no controlling legal authority."

I don’t get it. My polling place has a police tape type barrier. All of the campaigners are basically “given” a spot. First come, first serve of course. Nobody gets beyond the tape except voters.
