The Democrats suffered a debacle at the polls in the US on Tuesday -- and President Barack Obama is to blame. Once celebrated as a great communicator, the president has lost touch with the mood in his country. Now, he must re-invent himself. But can he succeed?
On Thursday, US President Barack Obama will be leaving Washington behind. He is embarking on a trip to Asia, including a stop in Indonesia. The flight is a long one -- almost an entire day. But Obama lived for a time in Indonesia as a child, and the feeling of being at home is something the president could use these days.
After the Congressional elections on Tuesday, it is certainly not a feeling he can enjoy in the US. The president can analyze the results all he wants, the dramatic losses his Democrats experienced at the polls and the loss of control of the House of Representatives. But he is unlikely to find a simple answer to the question as to how he should proceed.
To the right he is confronted by the stark hatred of the Tea Party movement. In the political center, voters abandoned Obama in droves. And on the left there are complaints that instead of Mr. Change, Obama has turned into Mr. Weakling. Young voters and African Americans are, of course, still behind Obama, but many of them didn't even bother to cast their ballots on Tuesday.
The debacle, the largest loss of seats for the president's party in more than half a century, isn't just a warning for Obama. It is a demolition. For two years, Obama was allowed to hope that he had managed to capture the heads of American voters in addition to their hearts. In fact, however, he only managed to find his way to

Correction for Der Spiegel:
He was a citizen of Indonesia, not just a short term visitor. He should feel at home there.

PULL ALL US MILITARY OUT OF GERMANY... SEVER ALL DIPLOMATIC RELATIONS. Do you think that would help them “get it”.

They already closed a lot of bases in Germany. You should have heard the gnashing of teeth way back when. I think the Germans are envious of us, always have been. They don’t have any idea what drives us.

African Americans are, of course, still behind Obama, A kernel of truthful corn in the general cow flop of this article. Blacks voted for him because he's black. And until he becomes a white man they will continue to vote for him. Blacks would rather follow a black man into poverty than a white man into wealth thus proving that black stereotypes are based on statistical reality.

Yes you are correct. The Germans are clueless when it comes to politics. And they for the most part have really never understood America. I have a German friend who told me he needed to live here 15 years before he understood American politics. And he's a smart guy and now a US citizen.
The Germans should stick to making cars, beer, tools and a few other things. They are damn good at that. The Germans should stay away from politics that are not confined to Germany. And Der Spiegel has to be one of the stupidest publications on earth (or at least coming from an advanced country).

Yes, you are correct in Georgia. You get it. We could have 30% unemployment, mind-blowing deficits, and blood in the streets and at least 85% of the blacks would vote for Obama. They voted for him simply because he was black. And NOTHING can or will change that. If Obama loses in a landslide election in 2012, he will do it despite getting 90% of the black vote. It doesn't matter how horrible he does in the next two years, he's assured 90% of black voters. This is a sad but true fact.

I did not have to live here 15 years to get it. I came to Colorado in 1974 and read 2 papers everyday, one liberal, one conservative. When my husband voted for carter, I was livid, but was very smug with my “I told you so” later.
My family in Germany is very liberal. Typical wealth envy, but do not donate to any charity. I don’t understand them.

Then you are a quick study for a German. I've always been puzzled how a people can be so brilliant in so many area like science, technology, music, business, and many other things but can when it comes to politics can be so very foolish. I have a Jewish friend from Israel who says the same thing about how foolish Jewish people are politically.

At two hundred million dollars per day, yeah, he's in touch with the common American. Right.

Very true... and no one in Europe gets us but the Conservatives in England... and even some of them are confused.
