UNIVERSITY CITY, Illinois -- Dannie Williams' widow says her husband died in a hail of gunfire, protecting his stepdaughter.

Williams, 47, was gunned down about 1 a.m. Monday in the backyard of his stepdaughter's home, in the 8500 block of Drury Lane in St. Louis.

Williams, of University City, had gone to the home on Drury after a late-night call from his stepdaughter, complaining that an acquaintance had broken into her home and beaten her up.

The acquaintance was gone by the time Williams got to her house. But as Williams stood in the back yard, talking to his stepdaughter and her boyfriend, someone stepped from the bushes and opened fire, said Williams' widow, Cynthia Crawford Williams. Everyone scattered.

"He took the bullet for her," Crawford Williams says. "He shielded her."

The wife doesn't talk about the daughter as if he was her father.

I'm guessing that's where the term, "stepdaughter," comes in.

So, if only the daughter had stayed with her father, then the stepfather would still be alive. I can see it. Barely.

No, if only the step father was carrying heat of his own then he could have returned fire.

Seems there are more low-life’s in this story then the one good man that was killed doing the right thing. Not to stereo-type but can we assume this is not middle America and simply where the low-life’s live?

Who is in the back yard and someone steps out of the shadows and fires off rounds at innocent people.

Yeah! If he was innocent, how the heck did he get so dead!?

I heard a sportscaster the other night, during the last World Series game, comment of the Giants’ move to San Francisco in 1958: “until then there were no major league teams west of the Mississippi.” So it seems that St. Louis is on the Illinois side of the Mississippi River.

Hey, come on, you’re being really harsh there - I’m sure there are a lot of people who confuse St. Louis with Sauget!

If I ever was in Sauget, I'm sure it would be because I was confused.

People could confuse St. Louis, Missouri, with San Luis Rey, California--they're both named for the same person. Topography is a bit different.
