So much of the national media's attention is focused Wednesday, shockingly, on Washington, where they live and work and where Republicans captured a half-dozen new Senate seats and five dozen new House seats. But out where most regular Americans live and work, voters also made historic changes -- to the long-lasting benefit of Republicans.
This is especially important in years ending in '00 because these newly elected governors and state legislators will (with the exception of California) be the ones redrawing legislative and congressional district lines that will stand for the next decade until the 2020 census. And occupying the governor's mansion puts that party in control of an immense statewide political apparatus to help its presidential ticket two years hence.
Come January, Republicans will now run crucial governors' offices in.... ...major presidential battleground states like Florida (Rick Scott), Ohio (John Kasich), Pennsylvania (Tom Corbett) and Iowa, where former Gov. Terry Branstad returns.
New Mexico voters elected their first female governor, Republican Susana Martinez, a Latino. Sometimes-maligned South Carolina voters chose Nikki Haley, who is not only the state's first female governor but only the nation's second of Indian American descent (Louisiana's Bobby Jindal being the other.) Oklahoma also picked its first female governor, Republican Mary Fallin.
According to the authoritative Stateline.org, the country's contests for governor and lieutenant governor cost $850 million. Heading into 2012, the GOP will control at least 29 of the 50 governor's suites.
Perhaps more importantly, the Republican wave at the national level was also felt at the grass-roots level, where Republicans gained control of at least 19 more state legislative chambers, possibly two dozen as vote-counting continues.

In Maine, the GOP captured the House, the Senate, and Governor. That trifeca hasn’t happened since 1962.
I’ve been saying that the real victory, although winning the House was great, was the wins at lower levels of government, this is where we have to start if we are going to ever take America back for real, and I mean with the freedoms we enjoyed back in the 50s and early 60s and before FDR also.
Yup. The flipping of state legislatures is the middle finger, and the senate and house are the other fingers and thumb folded in front of it. We could not have picked a better time to take the house by storm.

Years ending in “00.” Wonder if this paper is one of those that feels the people in fly-over states are the uneducated. Have to laugh at the one blog comment stating that “stupid people vote for stupid people.” Guess this genius thinks we are in the year 20100.

In Vermont our GOP governor was the only thing keeping the state from slipping into complete liberal madness. He retired and a Rat won the office. We are now well and truly screwed.
The counter-revolution is both broad and deep. The marxists, uh democrats seemed a bit perplexed. Wait until 2012, 21 democrat senators are up for re-election. And think about all those old democratic committee chairmen in the House who now have lost their position of priveledge who will consider retirement, because it will decades before the democrats could ever turn the tide in the House to be in the majority again.
I think the really amazing thing is reading such good news in the LAT.
Also from Michigan. Feels good to know that the state is finally catching on. This is amazing considering the fact that Granholm has presided over a state that is losing its working population while she makes the welfare state more generous than ever. If she were truly a “maverick” she would have made Michigan the very first “welfare free” state and watched Detroit become a barren wasteland. (Of course that would have meant losing the state’s best resource for manufactured Dem votes.)
I'm counting on at least 2 states to enact their own marriage amendments by the next election. I also hope that more states enact amendments to nullify Obamacare until the thing is either trashed by appeal, or deemed unconstitutional by the Supreme Ct.
I would have liked to know how many Congressional seats California will be losing due to their insane business practices driving people out of the state. I suspect there will be some lost seats.
Actually 23 if you count the two indies (Socialist Saunders of Vermont and Joe Lieberman) who caucus with them versus 10 Republicans.
I’ve been telling anyone who will listen that the real Slaughterhouse wasn’t in Washington, it was in the State Capitals.
Republicans basicly control redistricting now in all the growing states, and this will delete several more house seats, for at least a decade.
Plus, the States can now challenge what is happening in Washington, OPENLY
For the first time in 135 years, Alabama has a House and Senate both controlled by the GOP.

US House of Representatives - +1, Now 7 of 8 seats held by GOP
US Senate - Both seats held by GOP.
North Carolina made great strides as well, starting at the local level, judges, county commissioners, all the way up to the General Assembly which is now in Republican control for the first time in over a century (look out Gov. Perdue). It’s regretful however, that we still have lap dog Mike McIntyre as our representative but he will be gone in ‘12.
