FISHKILL Republican challenger Nan Hayworth won a surprisingly comfortable victory over Democratic Rep. John Hall Tuesday in a race that polls suggested would be a dead heat.
Hayworth led the two-term Democratic incumbent by 54 percent to 46 percent as of 11 p.m., as results from the five counties in New York's 19th Congressional District came in.
Hayworth supporters erupted with applause at the Hotel Sierra in Fishkill when the race was called for her at 11:20 p.m. "Go, Nan, go!" they chanted.
Hayworth sounded a central campaign theme in her victory speech.
"Our first priority will be to ensure that people have tax relief right away. That federal government that has weighed on us like a stone is going to shrink."
At 11:50 p.m., Hall conceded the race to Hayworth. He said it was harder for candidates to run independent campaigns in the face of donations from big business.
Hall, who unseated Republican Sue Kelly in 2006, supported the health-care bill, the stimulus package and tightened financial regulations in the past two years. Hayworth, a Westchester County doctor and political novice, opposed all of those measures.
I LOVE doctors being elected...we need more of them....
Correction... FIRST priority is the REPEAL of OBAMACARE!
Does this mean Orleans will be hitting the road again? LOL!
My family and I proudly voted against this jackass every time he ran. I’m very pleased to no longer be represented by a “progressive.”
