How Gay Days Made a Home at Disney World
Time ^ | June 21, 2010 | John Cloud

Like pretty much every child who walks up Main Street U.S.A. at Disney World for the first time, Alix, 10, and her brother Evan, 11, can barely contain their anticipation. Evan wants to ride Space Mountain. Alix is so excited, she can't even say what she wants to do. She is jumping up and down. It's a typical Disney scene, except that Evan, Alix and their sister Jamie, a desultory 4-year-old shielded from the sun in a stroller, have come to the Magic Kingdom with their two moms. It is the 20th anniversary of Gay Days at Disney, and the whole family has traveled from Hickory Corners, Mich., to celebrate.

Gay Days is now one of the largest gay-pride events in the world. According to Watermark, a Florida-based gay newspaper that has been covering Gay Days since it started, about 150,000 people attended this June's six-day gathering, which included 17 pool parties, a business expo, a comic-book convention, a film festival, an after-hours trip to a Disney water park (think dance music and guys in very small swimsuits), bobble-head painting and tie-dyeing for the kids, rivers of alcohol (and some other substances) for the adults and, on June 5, the great culmination: 20,000 to 30,000 lesbians, gays and their families and friends descending on Disney World, everyone clad in red shirts to signify their presence.

Gay Days started modestly in 1991 as a way for some 3,000 lesbians and gays from central Florida to become more visible — on one day,

“So Disney World tells all the straight folks to NOT come for a week in June”

Never said that. I am sure there are all sorts of straight families that are liberal and democrats that have no issue with exposing their children to the open perversions that takes place during gay week.

“Also, since Disney doesn’t organize the gay events, I think it would be hard to offer to sign people up for them - and if they did, wouldn't that then have Disney expressly cooperating with the Gay Days group?”

Disney would not be endorsing “gay” discounts, they would be demonstrating tolerance and sensitivity to their largest demographic: straight families looking for wholesome family fun.

Disney doesn't organize the event but they do offer group discounts for all sorts of organizations and such, and many gay organizations (and other organizations/groups) do have discounts set up all the time, so, it is normal when making a booking that a company asks if you are part of “groups such-and-such.”

“All I’m trying to say here is that Disney is in a tough situation, and there’s not a great solution for it.”

Not a great solution, for sure, but it is a solution nonetheless. Things will continue to get worse and worse unless something is done. Talk about angering people, there are a heck of a lot more straights than gays, and you are angering your major clientele by not somehow mentioning the gay week.

When Walt died, Disney went with him. The gays showing up is kind of like the vultures on the carcass. Gay days in our military is looming, far more ominously.

Ask anyone who worked in Disney PR from 1950 through 1980. Covering Walt’s homosexuality was a big time job.

Sorry, but here in Orlando or in TV news circles, this isn’t even news.

Known for years.

Disney most certainly could require some kind of modest dress code - if the “buttless chaps” story is really true, this would put a damper on it. Also, prohibiting certain behavior would dissuade disgusting displays. After all, I believe public sex is illegal everywhere (well, maybe not in San Fransicko.)

Disney died (1966) 5 years before Disney Orlando opened (1971). Construction started in 1968. You are so full of hogwash.

Why doesnt everyone just boycott the place? I remember going there with visiting relatives and their kids years ago and I thought it was pretentious and vulgar even before this whole homo thing started. If real families stop going the entire enterprise will fold.

Thanks. Your post explains a lot. I see that my mother might have been right not to have had a tv in the house when I was growing up.

I love both Disneyland and Disney World. I’ve been to both and for Disneyland, several times.

I see no reason why I should let some bunch of freaks ruin it for me. Why give them any control over my life? I still love the place.

Not possible. The author needs remedial biology classes.

and they also do not warn families about the Disney gay cruise week, either.

Probably because there's no such thing. Gays do go on the Disney cruises, but there's no organized Disney Gay Cruise Week.

Simple, just ask the people making the booking if they wish to sign up for any of the “gay” events or take advantage of the “gay” discounts on park hotels.

Except Disney doesn't have any "gay" discounts. Should they offer some?

It's a wonder Eisner didn't introduce two new characters to the Disney Parks

Hey everybody! It's Neal and Bob.

“That is true, but Disney should notify people that when they are making a booking during gay week, that they are making a booking during a time where gay behavior will be blatant, obvious and offensive. How to do that? Simple, just ask the people making the booking if they wish to sign up for any of the “gay” events or take advantage of the “gay” discounts on park hotels. Those offers would alert the unsuspecting families.”

Do you live in the US? The only segment of the economy that wasn’t hit hard was the Tort Bar. In fact, they are doing better than ever.

Do you know how sued they would be if someone from Disney were to do that? Do you know what the gay mafia would do to them in the press for warning people off?

The only people that could do anything about warning them would be travel agents, and they face a similar risk.

Blame the right people man. Gay - it’s not just a psychological disorder, it’s a political movement.

The truth you fail to understand or acknowledge, and is critically important to understanding this story, is that Walt installed a huge gay and gay-friendly hierarchy that permeated operations at the Disney Studio, Anaheim, Orlando, etc.

It survived long after his death.

It is still prevalent in many areas here.
