Poll: GOP candidates top Obama in hypothetical 2012 race
CNN ^ | 11/04/10

Washington (CNN) -- His party got its clock cleaned in Tuesday's midterm elections, but President Barack Obama still remains competitive in some hypothetical 2012 presidential election matchups, especially against Sarah Palin, a new poll shows.

A CNN/Opinion Research Corp. survey released Thursday also indicates that at the unofficial start of the race for the Republican presidential nomination, the field of possible contenders appears wide open with no front-runner.

Twenty-one percent of Republicans say they would most likely support 2008 GOP White House candidate and former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee for their party's 2012 presidential nomination, according to the poll.

The number is 20 percent for another 2008 Republican presidential hopeful, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney.

Fourteen percent say they support Palin, the former Alaska governor and 2008 GOP vice presidential nominee, with 12 percent backing former House Speaker Newt Gingrich of Georgia.

The remaining candidates, whose names were all in single digits, are led by Rep. Ron Paul of Texas, who also ran for the GOP presidential nomination the last time around, followed by Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour, Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty, Rep. Mike Pence of Indiana, and former Sen. Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania.

The poll's release comes as Santorum visits New Hampshire to give a speech about the midterm election results and the future of the Republican party. No one has yet to announce a bid for the GOP nomination.

In a possible general election showdown, Obama leads Palin 52-44 percent among all registered voters.

I'm sure you are just joking, but seriously - No more Bushes! EVER! We've had enough of them already.

And no more Kennedys, Doles, Clintons etc. either. This is supposed to be a democratic republic not an oligarchy.

I was indeed jesting and I hear ya on the whole oligarchy thing. How about we find a descendant of John Adams?

Rubio would we an excellent choice for VP as he would definitely bring the latino vote and he would gain experience to become a candidate in future elections.

or John Thune. These are all smart, articulate, committed conservatives.

Thune is a RINO.

“I like Rubio too and he scares the heck out of Demoncrats. They see possible Presidential material and the loss of what they consider their Hispanic vote.”

He definitely has a future ahead of him...he will get not only the latino vote but a lot of female voters...he has a lot of appeal. The Rats fear him !!!

Traditionally, we have not won with Congressmen, but with Governors. The last two Congressman we ran, Dole and McCain, lost quite handily. I think we should insist on candidates with executive experience, not legislative experience, for the Presidency. It’s best if have a clear record of competence and success as governor rather than going with someone who has really only had the job a short time (such as the Governors in VA or NJ, or any of the new Governors elected on Tuesday), as I want them to be able to show what accomplishments they’ve had. I’d also prefer to avoid candidates who were Governors but appeal to only portions of the party or are only conservative on select issues (e.g. Romney, Huckabee, who draw ire from social and fiscal conservatives, respectively).

So we should try to settle on a candidate who is: (1) competent & experienced; (2) a consistent conservative. Meet those simple criteria, and I’m on-board.

Pairing candidates on a ticket who meet those criteria and have different geographic and governing strengths would be ideal. For example, I think a Haley Barbour (MS Gov) and Mitch Daniels (IN Gov) ticket would be very effective.

Senator John Thune - Mark Kirk is One of the People Everybody Looks To

There's John Thune, pimping for a pro-partial birth abortion, gun-grabbing, open-borders, cap n' trade DIABLO who makes Dede Scozzafava look right-wing. Thune went all out to get that socialist nominated in the primary, and also was out in force to promote McCain for the Presidential nomination early in the primary season when the field was still wide open.

Meanwhile, a real principled conservative, John Bolton, was stabbed in the back by Thune so he could make a "statement" about pork for his home state.

Thune isn't a RINO, he's just an inside-the-beltway establishment "conservative" who votes the "right way" unless doing the right thing gets in the way of enriching his own clout and power.

Sad that some conservatives fall for the media's constant puff-pieces on Thune as an acceptable "tolerant" conservative. That should be a huge red flag to begin with.

I look forward to exposing Thune if this backstabber tries to get conservatives to promote him to the white house in 2012.

Palin/West

Now that’s one I’ve been thinking of. Would truly shine a light on the hypocrisy of the LEFT.

Although I could hear the whining now ....”but they’re not expeeeeerinced enouuuuuuugh.”

Are you of the belief that there is a viable conservative candidate that the MSM will not ruthlessly attack the moment that candidate is nominated?

Whoever Sarah Palin's handlers were should have known that CBS was out to get her. The Tina Fey thing well that is SNL but Sarah looked like a fool on Katie Couric. That ruined any chance at her winning POTUS IMO.

I know there are a lot of Palin worshipers on this site who think she can walk on water but she is a very flawed candidate. She has a dysfunctional family, she bailed on her job as Governor (STUPID MOVE), many of the candidates she supported (Mama Grizzlies) got hammered on Tuesday.

And to top that off she is doing a reality TV show. Is that going to help her chances of running for President?

I like Palin as a person but think she would guarantee Obama 4 more years, and I would be willing to bet anyone here $10,000 cash that I am correct.

After arguing with you all day, glad to be in agreement. I would go further, and exclude everyone who has only legislative experience, also folks who were in the Bush White House, and everyone whose political experience was east of the Hudson River.

I love Palin, she is incredible and her time may come, but she is way too polarizing right now...no thanks to the incessant media bashing...and I fear she may ignite their base when Obama is all abut dead in the water.

Perfectly stated, but the cult of Sarah will be out to get you banned for saying that. She is a combo of Jesus, Moses and Winston Churchill, just ask some of the worshipers on this site who think she'll win every state in the union.

I am sick of being bashed because I think she is a bad candidate not a bad person. She has made an abundance of stupid moves. Moderates hate her. The vote in this country is controlled in the cities and suburbs, I would wager 99% of those in the cities and suburbs would vote for Zero over Palin. Her negatives are worse than Obama!!!

This speculation is all moot because Obama isn’t even going to be the candidate in 2012.

And also very importantly, Thune may be the only answer to Romney getting the nomination. Regardless of what anyone thinks of Romney, he has positioned himself as the front runner heading into the primaries. Thune matches up well against Romney and could be the spoiler that keeps Romney from the nomination.

By the first of January, 2008, the nomination process was nearly over. The work of picking the nominees will be out of the hands of the grassroots and into the hands of the political pros by the end of 2011.

I agree, rather than risk losing and damaging what he perceives as his great legacy, he will come up with a bogus excuse not to run while trumpeting his great accomplishments, and Hillary Clinton will be the Dem nominee.

Huckabee and Palin have turned into overexposed, money-grubbing celebrities. Romney is invisible. You’re right; we need new faces.

Yes, and she’s NOT a “retread” like some ‘retard’ mentioned in a previous reply. She was only running for VP. Big difference.
