(Nov. 5) -- A woman convicted of shooting and killing her husband after allegedly suffering years of abuse wants women to know they can get help without resorting to violence.
Women are sometimes "hesitant to speak out and ask for help," Mary Winkler told NBC's "Today" show this morning. But, she said, "someone will believe you."
Winkler, who was convicted of voluntary manslaughter for the March 2006 killing of her preacher husband, Matthew Winkler, served less than a year behind bars. Just two years later, in 2008, she regained full custody of her three daughters. But the Tennessee woman said justice was served.

She shot her husband in the back. She should be in prison. Hopefully, she won’t kill her kids.
It’s sick that she is being lionized and allowed to have her daughters. It’s one thing for a woman to kill her spouse in self defense, but she shot a sleeping man and had not a shred of real evidence to prove he did anything. Why can’t any woman shoot a sleeping man and say she had to?
She should be marched into the lethal injection chamber. She's the poster girl for judicial double standards in this country. And to get the kids back? Somebody got greased for that to happen.
I don't buy any of her abuse claims either.
Travesty of justice and the crowning offense was giving the killer child custody over grandparents Dan and Diane Winkler.
She killed the Fonz?!
I never could figure out how she got off like that. I am with you...she needed prison time.
Spouses are often tough to deal with and become abusive as the marriage goes on. To fix the problem you can;
a. Pack up the kids, get in the car, move out and file for divorce and end up with about half the stuff.
B. Shoot someone in the back of the head while they are sleeping and keep ALL the stuff.
It is first degree premeditated murder and she walked away free. Disgusting.
Having known a few “pastors” that were total $hithead$, I don’t know what to believe.
My gut tells me he WAS a jerk, but that she had ample opportunity to get away, and didn’t need to resort to murder.
If she was in fact beat by her husband, then he got what he deserved.
I believe that she committed murder. But it does appear she’s going to pay after all. MS can affect people in varying degrees but it’s entirely possible she’ll be a prisoner in a wheelchair in the future, with little control over her own body. After watching a friend deal with this disease it looks like a prison sentence to me.
LOL. That was my first thought too.
I’ve seen some Evangelical pastors that were emotionally abusive. My husband’s brother has been an Evangelical pastor for years. His wife was not allowed to drive, work, or make any decisions. She was not allowed to wear slacks and was forced to wear long dresses only. No makeup either. She always seemed to be beaten down and unnaturally submissive. Their daughter was treated the same way. She wasn’t allowed to take gym class in high school because they were required to wear shorts and she wasn’t allowed to wear anything except dresses. She left home at 17 and doesn’t have much to do with him to this day.
I have a really hard time figuring out why women marry men like this. My SIL would have had a hard time leaving even if she had wanted to due to no skills, etc. but it wouldn’t have been impossible. I doubt Mrs. Winkler was in that situation. She could have left instead of killing him.
Now, if we can only get Muslim wives to follow this example, the war would be over and more earthbound women would be available for those horny ragheads.
I know about abuse from family. Imagine a dog that’s been beaten until it’s broken, completely bereft of spirit or initiative, a shell of its former self, too afraid to even run away. That’s not necessarily saying she was right, but abused women can get pretty screwed up in the head.
She got away with cold blooded pre-meditiated murder. That she gains financially and personally from it makes me sick.
Oh please! Now we’re supposed to feel sorry for her because she can’t “forgive herself”? She shotgunned her husband in the back, defamed his name after he was in the ground, and then played the gender card to get out of the consequences.
Afterwards, her inlaws, in a case of Christian charity, remain civil to her for the sake of the children. It doesn’t sound much like a family that would raise a “monster”.
She can add “attention whore” to murderess and manipulator in her resume.
Yes, with no income or skills and three children it’s very hard to leave. Especially when family, friends and church see him as being “perfect”. Who would help her? Where could she go where he couldn’t find her? She feared him.
Still the sentence was too light.
