Americans Vote for Maturity
Wall Street Journal ^ | November 5, 2010 | Peggy Noonan

Posted on 11/06/2010 6:13:10 AM PDT by libstripper

'The people have spoken, the bastards." That would be how Democrats in the White House and on Capitol Hill are feeling. The last two years of their leadership have been rebuffed. The question for the Democratic Party: Was it worth it? Was it worth following the president and the speaker in their mad pursuit of liberal legislation that the country would not, could not, like? And what will you do now? Which path will you take?

The Republicans saw their own establishment firmly, sharply put down. The question for them: What will you do to show yourselves worthy of the bounty?

Peggy is finally, painfully, coming to see what we all knew from the outset about the Illegal. Unfortunately, she still, bitterly, irrationally hates Sarah Palin, possibly even more than before.

I don’t think Peggy is showing maturity when she refers to Palin as a nimcompoop. Nonetheless, her article makes some excellent points.

I do not think her comments on Palin are ‘irrational”, harsh maybe, but not irrational. Palin increasingly has to choose how she presents herself to more than just the right.

You can deny that there are independents who are not just yet convinced of Palin as serious, but that contingent is there, like it or not. And there are conservatives who are not convinced. Just because we really, really like someone does not make the “doubters” go away. That is the point Noonan was making.

Excellent article. The best from Peggy for a while.

Americans voted for smaller government, period. “Maturity” doesn’t mean a thing if it’s just liberal old age. (See Peggy Noonan as an example: older, but no wiser.) I’d vote for a 21-year-old before Harry Reid.

You are too kind, perhaps. More likely the old, rusty, obsolete weather vane is just creaking and grating as it adjusts to a new change in the winds.

So, Mitch Daniels for president? He’s short, he’s bald, and he has budgeting and financial management experience.

By and large, this article is proof positive of the old axiom: “Even a blind pig finds an occasional acorn.”

As to Noonan’s vitriolic, over the edge hatred of Sarah, it’s really all very simple: Sarah is a youthful and beautiful acknowledged leader; Noonan is a wrinkled up old has-been whose primary role is to be trotted out by the far left whenever they want to present “proof” that a “conservative” agrees with them.

Most Democrats view Palin the same way Republicans view Pelosi. Wish it weren’t so, but that’s the way it is. That rabid animosity has a huge influence on the mushy middle who are easily influenced and toss about in the wind from one election cycle to the next. Unfortunately once the template is set, it’s impossible to change it.

When their candidates are attacked conservatives and liberals alike respond in the same way. They circle the wagons and promote that candidate whether the candidate is the best one for the position or not or whether the attack is justified or not. While it’s admirable to stick up for your guys, it’s not always the best move to promote them just to stick your finger in the oppositions’ eyes. That “we’ll show them” reflex is going to backfire from time to time.

I think that’s what’s going on with Pelosi. She’s running to inflict revenge and getting support from her troops because she has been attacked and blamed so ruthlessly. It’s great when they do it, but we should be more judicious about having a similar response.

Seeing as she does get somethings correct, I assume she will have the Sarah “awakening” at the appropiate time....it’s harder for some folks to see than others, but Madam President is the one.......

I like Sarah Palin, but I didn’t like at all that she didn’t know it was “Bonzo.” She’s supposed to be such a big Reagan fan, and she doesn’t know the correct name of one of his most well-known movies? That seems strange to me. She also seems very flippant in her answer about Reagan’s acting career. Granted, I’m just going by Noonan’s quote, since I didn’t see the interview. But I wish Palin would be more judicious in what she says sometimes.

“Obama is POTUS becasue of this nutjob.”

I’m not sure I want to accord Peggy Noonan that much power. However, given her positions in the 2008 election, it is ironic she’d be penning something like this:

“Here is an old tradition badly in need of return: You have to earn your way into politics. You should go have a life, build a string of accomplishments, then enter public service. And you need actual talent: You have to be able to bring people in and along. You can’t just bully them, you can’t just assert and taunt, you have to be able to persuade.”

Apparently she was so bamboozled by The One in 2008 that she forgot this useful tradition.

Peggy, Peggy, Peggy. You are still Persona Non Grata over on this side of the aisle. You need to fade away and try to figure out if it was senile dementia that allowed you to so forcefully support Obama. All the rest of us actually LOOKED INTO HIS BACKGROUND. We KNEW what he was going to do. Too late for you. Retire now.

"So, Mitch Daniels for president?"

Works for me. We could use a Coolidge clone about now. And Sarah Palin would make a great Secretary of Energy in a Daniels-Barbour administration. (or Barbour-Daniels, or throw Chistie into the mix somewhere. It's time for substance over sizzle for a while.) And speaking of sizzle, flame suit is now donned and in place.

The tea party is the private sector reacting to a rational fear.

What this election shows is that the people have finally realized that the liberal penchant for pounding employers and investors (read “rich”) in the name of redistribution, is harmful to employees, future employees, and puts water in the economy’s fuel tank.

They realized the car was never going to come out of the ditch, until the liberals put the drivers back in the driver’s seat.

No, “Nooner” wasn’t making any point about SP, she was just trying to find a reason to insult her.
